The 'For Seniors' series-within-a-series titles from Wiley's long-established 'For Dummies' titles is relatively new and recognises what is often now known as 'Silver Surfers' or those who would previously not be considered as likely to buy or to use a computer. However, that situation continues to change and first-time users of both Macs and PCs are not just 50-somethings but can be in their 60s, 70s or older. Some organisations also provide courses to help older individuals choose their computer, set it up and use it.

Common uses may include some of the same things that younger users also use, and word processing, especially for wannabe authors is quite common. Other uses include photography and the Internet for online shopping, and things like Skype where they can communicate with family separated by great distance as well as social media sites where photographs or movies of grandchildren not often seen in person may be most easily viewed. Dating web sites are also sometimes used and some have even set up online businesses. Others may have digitised vintage record collections which are not always easy to play by other means.

This title covers most of those options and is obviously for those who choose Macs, whether one of the MacBook ranges or the all-in-one iMacs. With the Mac's long-earned reputation as an easy-to-use system, those who do not wish to do so need not unduly concern themselves with what is happening behind the scenes. This makes the choice an easy one for the older user who can, in effect, plug it in and get started almost immediately. The book gently takes these users by the hand and guides them through the machines and their respective characteristics and their software, the provided applications and also some of those which they may choose to purchase, although it does so without delving too far into technical issues.

Although intended for the older user, there is no reason why a younger and less technically aware user could not or need not take full advantage of its simpler and gentler approach. I have read other titles from the same range of 'Seniors' books and have been very impressed with their easy style. This one is no different in its handling of the subject and Wiley are doing well to maintain the standard. The book is therefore highly recommended, not only in its own right and on its own merits but as a viable and less technical alternative to the related 'Macs for Dummies' and companion titles for iMac and MacBook Pro computers.
