5.0 out of 5 stars A book about Photoshop for those who do not like technical books, 28 Dec 2012

This review is from: Teach Yourself Visually Adobe Photoshop CS6 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech)) (Paperback)
The 'Teach Yourself Visually' series was established several years ago and is similar to one used by another publisher. Its concept is simple and easy to use and to follow.

Photoshop is a very complex package and the latest CS6 version slightly more so than its predecessors. Most books on this subject will be very technically worded and comprise large amounts of text followed by the occasional image, few of which will be screen captures taken during one or two of the steps involved in whatever procedure the author is attempting to explain. The more technically-minded will have few issues in following such books although even they will sometimes need to read a section or two more than once to fully understand what is intended.

This series turns that concept upside-down. It uses images almost exclusively and minimises the amount of text often to issues relating to the menu and sub-menu in which to find a certain function. This makes the books in the series easy to use and I have bought several in addition to the more wordy alternatives also available. As the images require a lot of space, the book's approach is to deal mostly with the basic and more everyday functions and to leave the little used for another day or another book.

The book is broken down into 15 chapters and covers both Mac and PC users. The presentation and operation varies slightly from one to the other but, for 99% of the time, there is a clear and obvious connection between the Mac and PC ways of doing things. You will probably not need worry about the few exceptions. The book is more of a 'Getting Started' guide than a comprehensive manual, but that is precisely what the first-time user will need.

With its easy-to-use and easy-to-follow style of presentation, there should be little or no confusion and the book is therefore recommended for users of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Photoshop CS6: Back to Basics!, 28 July 2012

Oh! How I wish I had owned a book like this one back when I began back in 2001. It would have saved me a lot of trial and error, and simply not using certain functions, because I wasn't quite sure what they did. Although I was lucky enough to have excellent teachers during the years, who taught me tricks of photo editing, such as adjusting levels and curves, layers, filters, color selection, and so forth, I knew that there was an awful lot that I still had to discover (and I am still in the process of discovering).

I just upgraded from CS5 5o CS6, so I am a longtime Adobe user (I believe I started with the old Photoshop 5). "Teach Yourself Visually: Adobe Photoshop CS6", however, targets the first-time user of the application. The book is, however, by no means 'dumbed down.' Proliferated with colorful screenshots and step-by-step instructions, it serves as a handy manual for review. It is also extremely clear in its instructions, employing bold-faced numbered steps for essential actions; bulleted steps for clarification and indented steps for the result. It also defines its terms clearly, presenting them in -italics- so that they will not be missed. In addition, the book gives not only tips and shortcuts, but also warnings about what not to do.

My only complaint is that the screenshots are on the small side (One needs a magnifying glass to see the details). The book nevertheless makes up for this defect by defining its terms clearly, so that the new Photoshop user will get a head start in working with images. It also carefully explains the toolbox and the individual tools. And while it does not go into advanced tasks, such as puppet warp, the book provides plenty of information about the hands-on basics that will not only help you build your basic Photoshop skills but will also remove the guesswork about the functions of this outstanding application.

This is not full detail of everything that is there in photoshop, it takes the essentials, like curves, levels, layers etc and visually explains how each works, giving good examples of slight variations based on questions a reader might pose. It logically lays down the detail, with numbered steps on photographs of photoshop screens and will really get you started but you may need a more detailed photoshop bible to supplement it as you get better. But gets you going
