.... until I got it. Very well structured and illustrated throughout, it's basic enough for those new to DSLRs but covers all the features of the D5100 for intermediates and those looking to squeeze max performance out of the camera. Really glad I got this and I've only just started to delve into the range of what the camera can do. But at least I know whatever I want to do, this book will have it covered.

Only complaint is that it's really too big to carry around with you on a shoot :)

This is my very first "For Dummies" book... I was, and still am, surprised how very useful it is. At first I figured it would be way too basic. I have used many camera's over quite a few decades and thought that the book would be mainly for the "first time photographer" Well it is for the first timer, but it is also structured so that even the more experienced camera addict will find it both relevant and interesting too. I got "Nikon D5100 for Dummies" 'cos I had never had a camera like the D5100 before and I wanted to get the most out of it. I would say that if you have recently purchased the Camera you will not regret paying out for this excellent "Dummies" book... well worth the money and is useful... surprising very useful.

What can you say about the Dummies series that has not been said better before. It works from the scenario that the last and only camera you've owned was a cardboard box with a pin hole in the front and takes you gently by the hand and guides you through the mysteries of photography into the arcane world of white balance; focal length; shutter speed; aperture setting etc. etc. This is an excellent book for any budding photographer at whatever level and with whatever knowledge - and it's done with humour as well.

I borrowed this book from my local library and was so impressed with it i decided to purchase the book myself.
I needed this book to learn about Dslr cameras and especially the one stated as it was my first Dslr iv'e owned.
The book has a great amount of information and has helped me a great deal on understanding the most simplest and confusing parts of setting up the camera with plenty of hints and tips to better your shots. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Wonderful book, although I am quite an experienced photographer, there are sections in this book that the manual supplied with the camera does not even mention and one would never know the full capabilities of the D5100 without having this book. In fact I still have a lot to learn and practice. The book is very clear to follow and very, very informative. Full marks to Julie Adair King

Standard for the type of this series of book. It may be for dummies but it still takes a fair bit of reading. However I like the set up of this book, you can just dip in and out of it for whatever you want at the time. The additional tips and info make this a good book to have especially if you are just starting out with photography or moving up from a compact to a DSLR.

I bought this book for my wife along with a camera to go with it. I was worried that she would not appreciate the gift, but how wrong could I be? She has had her head firmly in the book since opening it, and is quickly becoming an expert. A great book, and not just for beginners either, an excellent source of information written in a clear, concise way.

got this to help me get the best out of my D5100.

The first half of the book is model specific with the latter half sdealing with techniques etc. I've not got one to compare it to but my guess is that the 2nd half of the book is repeated in many of the various model specific dummies volumes.

Good value and a big help to me - the dummies tag line isn't really true - but the info is presented in a very clear manner.

Recommned for newcomers to DSLR camer'a but possibly not for more advance photographers.

As someone familiar with old school SLRs I did not think I would need help with my new Nikon DSLR. How wrong I was. This reference guide gets used all the time. Covers basics through to advanced settings with tips as to how to change the default settings to more useful everyday settings. Recommended.
