5.0 out of 5 stars Practical trust, 26 Aug. 2014
This review is from: The Honesty Pot: A Pierian Decade (Paperback)
The Pierian Centre, a distinctive, possibly unique venture, emerged out of an individual vision to become a living entity which touched the lives of many across and within Bristol’s diverse communities (including its ‘silent refugees’). Fluently and idiosyncratically written by Nick Thomas, this book describes the sources of June Burrough’s vision, her quest for a property which led her to reclaim a grade 1 listed building, the high and lows of running a business initially as a sole trader and then as one of the UK’s first Community Interest Companies, and on to her closure of the Centre, achieved in creative style and with exemplary thoughtfulness.

In the Pierian Centre, the Honesty Pot was both a practical convenience and a symbol of trust in others. It is the values that June held – through thick and thin – that were integral to her enterprise and which Nick skilfully examines. This is the heart of the book; what sets the Pierian Centre and its legacy apart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Moving, 20 July 2014
This review is from: The Honesty Pot: A Pierian Decade (Paperback)
An inspiring story of one remarkable woman's vision for a better way of living translated into reality. The Pierian Centre was a unique, and very beautiful place in Bristol that offered different communities a place to meet, to interact, to teach, to perform, to learn and to share. This is the story of how it came about, how it developed and thrived and how it ended but above all it is the story of the woman behind it. June Burrough's belief in the positive potential of all human relationships permeated everything that took place under the name of the centre and was a powerful transformative force for all of us lucky enough to enjoy its presence in the heart of the city. Read this and be moved and inspired by what a single person can do when he or she believes passionately enough in what it is they are doing.

4.0 out of 5 stars through love and hard work, 18 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Honesty Pot: A Pierian Decade (Paperback)
This is a fascinating book which describes the growth of an experiment in living and working
and creating, through love and hard work, a true spirit of community. June Burrough was the instigator and inspiration of the project and Nick Thomas who worked with her, describes the enormous challenges they had to meet and the profound effect the Pierian Centre had locally in Bristol, also involving the immigrant community, and instigating several projects of national and international importance.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the Centre seems to have been the sense of theatre and flare with which all this good work was done, in an old and beautiful house where there was always a welcome and plenty of coffee and biscuits!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Really Excellent Read !, 12 Oct. 2014
This review is from: The Honesty Pot: A Pierian Decade (Paperback)
The Honesty Pot is a really excellent read - both very enjoyable and thought-provoking. My enjoyment of the book was enhanced by the superbly florid writing of Nick Thomas. I'd expect the book to be of real interest not only to the many people who this project reached out to but also to anyone thinking of becoming involved in a community initiative. Read the book and you'll drink deep from the Pierian Spring !

A lovely reminder of a special decade. The Pierian Centre touched thousands and thousands of lives. This book tells the story and shows how and why such a relatively small organisation had such a big impact.
