5.0 out of 5 stars A godsend, must read., 8 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Two Scoops of Django: Best Practices For Django 1.6 (Paperback)
I originally purchased 1.5 and have been anxiously awaiting this revision. Lots new content updated and worth the repurchased for sure. Although opinionated this book does not push you into single way of thinking, instead it helps you explore the pros and cons and introduces new concepts I personally ‘should’ but didn't know about.

As a self taught developer I don’t have the experience of other developers to draw off, this book is a godsend.

It’s not a beginner ‘how to’ book, if you want to learn Django make this the second book you read.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are a Django developer, stop reading this review and buy this book now., 7 Feb 2014

This review is from: Two Scoops of Django: Best Practices For Django 1.6 (Paperback)
Every Django developer out there should have this book. The writing is of a quality that is rarely found in technical books. At the same time, it gives very actionable advice, teaches you new ways of thinking in some areas, and is still light and occasionally humorous to read. Even though I had thoroughly read the 1.5 version and have years of experience with Django development, I learned something new in my first ten minutes of reading.

The content is incredibly thorough and extensive, but also still very accessible. Many documented practices are fairly independent of each other, so even if you decide to diverge from the authors' opinions in some area, that doesn't reduce the value of the rest of the book. However, you'll find that a rare issue, because the practices from this book are clearly motivated.

I wish every technical book was written like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive Django developer companion, 15 Feb 2014

This review is from: Two Scoops of Django: Best Practices For Django 1.6 (Paperback)
With nearly every web framework available: the tutorial available leaves you wanting more, or throws you out into the world to figure things out for yourself. Even for an experienced engineer or web developer it can be daunting trying to discover the best practices and little tricks.

Two Scoops of Django solves this problem for the Django web framework: from recommended project layouts right up to advice on publishing your own Django packages, 2scoops is a perfect companion for any Django developer, beginner or expert.

I'm certain plenty of web frameworks are envious that the Django community has Danny and Audrey, the authors, who have dedicated their time giving the community something that is desperately needed.

For anyone who has just finished the tutorial, to the expert asking "Is this really the best way to do this in Django?" this book is perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Years of experience distilled into a book., 13 Feb 2014
This review is from: Two Scoops of Django: Best Practices For Django 1.6 (Paperback)
This book is a must have for every Django developer. The two authors have years of advanced Django experience, and they have distilled all the mistakes you do into a book.

Although it is aimed at those with Django experience, it's also invaluable for somebody starting to develop Django, as it will prevent you from making loads of mistakes. It's written in a clear pedagogical way, and having this book will effectively add a year or two of Django experience to your knowledge.

If you develop Django, you *have* to have this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Django masterclass, 11 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Two Scoops of Django: Best Practices For Django 1.6 (Paperback)
This book differs from other django books. It is not a reference manual, or a getting-started, or a cook-book. It assumes the reader has experience with django and then provides opinion and discussion on best practices on the full range of topics that arise when one is developing django projects.
The opinions expressed are wise and authoritative and confident but never dogmatic or condescending. The advice is the product of years of experience on the part of the authors and their colleagues and friends in the django community. That's why I see this book as being like a masterclass: It is for advanced students to glean the wisdom of the masters.
One of the many things I loved about this book was that it seems that it was put together with patience and thought. It is the opposite of the many "rush to market" books that are thin and shallow in their content and are little more than hastily put together bundles of otherwise publicly available information on the internet.
I highly recommend this for anyone seriously involved in the development of django based projects. However, I would also recommend it for beginners, when accompanied by another more introductory text. Even beginners will quickly encounter the topics and issues that are discussed in depth here, and it is good to have the wisdom of the sages at hand from the beginning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Opinionated expert guidance, 20 Feb 2014

This review is from: Two Scoops of Django: Best Practices For Django 1.6 (Paperback)
This is what all software library/language books should be like. Not a dry reference book, instead this is a combination of high-level development advice and low-level gotchas you'll only hear from people who've spent years with Django.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clear, detailed and well researched, 4 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Two Scoops of Django: Best Practices For Django 1.6 (Paperback)
Well written and carefully assembled, this book is a great introduction to Django for beginners. It does also act as a handy reference for experienced users too, something in it for every level. The suggested best practices are great and thoroughly referenced.

Found the icecream illustrations a bit distracting and pointless at times, waste of paper in my personal opinion, but they do break up the text nicely in places. Also felt that the number of code examples that wrap over page breaks a bit annoying, something that could've been prioritised over the aforementioned illustrations perhaps.

Would recommend to anyone getting into Django or who has dabbled but wants to learn more about it.

Having come from their Two Scoops 1.5 book, it is obvious that a lot of effort has gone into fleshing out the book for this version. Topics are covered in more depth and with good examples as well as highlighting bad practices.

Written in a friendly and fun style, the examples used stick with a single topic throughout which helps.

Very much recommended.
