It is not clear from the Amazon blurb, but this book is written from a life insurance, asset, large company perspective, presumably reflecting the author's background, so beware if, like me, your interest is primarily from a general insurance, liability, small company point of view.

That being said, there is much to commend here. The author is not afraid to put forward his opinion and is particularly good on the subject of uncertainty, clearly explaining the scale of uncertainty in these models and the implications of this for model design and use. The section on efficient markets and CAPM is also good. The style is unusually avuncular for an actuarial textbook and it is very readable throughout.

Although some of the "tips" are somewhat tenuous (e.g. Tip 23: Hedge inflation with music royalties) and some of the examples discussed were unrecognisable to me (e.g. "Deathstar" models that take months to run), anyone interested in capital modelling would certainly find this book stimulating and thought provoking.

Dr Modisett has set out 100 very practical capital management ideas that can be implemented today. His natural language used to explain these ideas make them accessible to all levels, from student/internship level through to Board level. A highly recommended read! And one to keep on the desk when looking for new ideas.

The first popular science book for aspiring and qualified Actuaries also seeks to win the hearts and minds of the board on capital management. Dr Modisett's refreshing take on risk and its management as a business tool has humour, illustrations and career advice throughout and aims to wake up the "sleeping army" of quiet but bright and talented Actuaries. Highly recommended.

A well written, highly digestible book that's not just for actuaries. As an accountant involved in "solvency" within the insurance world, this book has helped clarify my understanding of the approaches used and resulting solvency and capital numbers.
