I was asked to read this and was dreading it. Romance is my very last choice of genre and this is a real tome at 448 pages.
The story unfolds with a surprisingly authentic portrayal of a naive girl-next-door as she begins her journey of romance with Doug. The tale is well paced without the rush, jumps or over indulgence of inexperienced authors and will keep you engrossed as you quickly engage and empathise with the key character of Sally.
By the time you reach the deliciously and convincing introduction of Moira, you realize that you are hooked into that most hallowed of goals - a truly natural read. The steamier descriptions of passion blossom with the story and show that it was written by a woman with true experience and the gift to impart it compellingly. I won't spoil your enjoyment by describing any more but will add that you will be surprised at the lack of clichés and winces that seems so prevalent with this overindulged genre.
So on to an intriguing question - given the quality of this tale - is this really by a debut author? We have all witnessed the recent tricks and shenanigans of writers who want to reinvent themselves... or am I just being cynical because I'm forced to say, through gritted teeth, that I truly enjoyed it and will certainly be looking out for the next instalment?

There is many love stories out there, but this one is written from the heart and MUST be read by every women... and some men; if they think they can handle it ;)... Ladies, might not be a good idea to read it in bed with your partner next to you, you'll be wishing it was Doug instead ;) This incredibly well written book really sets the scenes; both in the bedroom and the idyllic surroundings in which the main character, Sally, begins her exciting yet daunting journey as a young girl who knows barely anything about the big bad world but clearly inquisitive like a little filly. The author uses a beautifully descriptive way of writing throughout the book which allows the reader to almost feel as if you are in Sally's shoes; which takes you through an emotional roller coaster of happiness, sadness, bitterness and new beginnings. You wont be able to put this book down, and leaves you waiting, in anticipation for book 2 to continue the journey with lovely Sally, who you instantly become fond of.... Absolutely loved every minute of this book!!

When I first read this book, I literally could not put it down! In between working with horses myself, I was in and out of the house at every break I could to get stuck in to this thought-provoking love story. It really gave me an insight in to the contrasting life that the protagonist Sally had as a young girl in the UK to suddenly being driven by heart-ache to the Middle East. The story cleverly plays with your emotions as Sally's whirlwind romance with Doug is fresh yet lustful to a downward spiral when Moira enters the picture. Anyhow, this emotional roller-coaster leaves you desperately wanting to find out more, and when I found out there were 4 books it was a miracle!! Fantastically written novel by Jenny Lees, it's almost unbelievable that she is a first time author! Bring on Book 2,Sensual Love!

Not sure what the men will think of this but I loved it and couldn't put it down...can't wait for the next one in the series...

Jenny Lees really captures the struggles and strifes of a convent educated teenager in the 60's...the naivety, lack of sex-education and the "trouble" it can all bring. She brings Sally's character to life with vivid descriptive techniques and I was completely in Sally's shoes throughout the book.

When, Sally moves to the Middle East, we can really imagine her initial fears and then we grow with her love of the new and unknown culture. We are able to laugh at the "predicaments" Sally getS herself into along her journey and are left waiting for the next book to come along ASAP!

I reviewed this novel not as a literary specialist or expert but only as an admiring and grateful reader. If this is Jenny Lees' first novel, judging by the standard of writing, it will certainly not be her last. It is a powerful story of love and betrayal, told with authenticity laced with with gentle humour and is obviously the product of a born story teller. Her characters are well defined and her explicit descriptive love scenes are captiviating, unforced and natural. The mingling of peoples and traditions and turns of speech are obviously what Jenny has seen and experienced for herself, and this has fastened on her memory and fashioned for us a book that gives lasting enjoyment to the reader.

I have had books recommended by friends in the past and have sometimes found them disappointing. Not this one! The plot kept my attention right to the last page. I identified with Sally; her feelings and emotions were so true to life. Doug was every girls' dream yet very believable. Sally's relationship with her mother reminded me of my teenage years ( hiding the awful dress my mother had chosen for me to wear on a date)

Not wanting to give too much of the plot away I will just say that The way the story unfolds makes compelling reading and I can't wait for book 2 to be published.

A very well written book, portraying real life in the sixties. The story of a young convent educated girl falling in love for the first time, armed with only the teaching of nuns to guide her. Sally's story is difficult to put down and although a sizeable book, the last page comes all too soon. Can't wait for the next one! Do we really have to wait until February for more Jenny Lees?

An excellent book which I could not put down. The authors descriptive text makes you feel as if you are actually shadowing Sally as she journeys through her life. With so many unpredictable twists and turns the book is captivating. I cannot wait until February 2014 when Seven Bands of Gold : Book Two - Sensual Love is published. Thank you Jenny Lees.

An easy read but one that kept your interest. I suppose I should comment on plot lines and depth of characters but For me what is important about a book is did it make me look forward to reading it each evening and did I find myself wanting to read on? That was definitely the case.
