This is rather a strange book, which is probably a good thing when you consider its title, a clear opposite to normality and something that is not probably going to be your typical read.

A splendid festive gift: The Surrealist Cookbook is now available from Dark Windows Press. You may be keen to boil someone's head, make vegetarian brains or curried love, perhaps you fancy a communist cocktail or a cup of touareg tea? All of these recipes and many more are included in this book along with poetry, prose and pictures from around the world. The Surrealist Cookbook will sit on your bookshelf along with your other favourite cookbooks and will be returned to again and again for that one special recipe that you choose to keep close to your imagination.

In parts, The Surrealist Cookbook is a fairly conventional cookbook as it contains recipes for a number of meals, drinks and desserts. Some of these are adapted from ideas by people associated with the history of surrealism (including Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, David Gascoyne, Conroy Maddox, J.G. Ballard, Remedios Varo and Luis Buñuel) and others are used to link together visual art and poetic works. The majority of the recipes are intended for use in the kitchen although some are complete flights of fancy.

The Anarchist Cocktail, Anarchist's Demo Flapjack, Aşure, Avocado & Brains on Toast, Ballard's Late Lunch, Buñueloni, Buñuel's Perfect Dry Martini, Casanova Cocktail, Casserole of Calf 's Head, Cheese & Raisin Tart, The Communist Cocktail, Conroy Maddox's Tomato Finger Soup, Curried Love, Dali and Buñuel's Man Snacks, Hard-Boiled Egg Dice, Horchata, Lemon Drizzle Cake, Potted Caws Guisada Pobi, Prickly Pears with Anise, Rayograph served with Suicide, Sausage Boats, Torrijas, Touareg Tea, Vegetarian Black Mole from Oaxaca, Vegetarian Brains, Unión General de Trabajadores Bread & The Washington Colorado Brownie.

This is rather a strange book, which is probably a good thing when you consider its title, a clear opposite to normality and something that is not probably going to be your typical read.

In a nutshell this is a squat softback book with many "rather different" recipes, plus various bits of poetry, trivia and other things for good measure. Unlike other books that try to use visual effects to be different, this one seems to deliver a lot more in a slightly low key manner. Many of the recipes here would be suitable for jokey events such as Halloween or even a rather different stag night dinner, whether you want to shock, amaze or just amuse your guests. Not everything is necessarily scary or icky either, some of the recipes are actually interestingly curious and would look rather different at any dinner party, such as the colourful hard-boiled egg dice.

Yet this book has left this reviewer in a bit of a quandary as it is sufficiently different to be engaging or possibly worthy of purchase just by virtue of being different, yet the book does seem to be rather padded out by non-recipe materials. If this reviewer wanted a book with lots of poetry and creative writing then he would buy a book with it in. This book instead feels that it has crossed the line from material supporting the recipes to it dominating the book. One rule of thumb is if you flip through the book you should fall on more recipes than on supporting information. Sadly this is not the case here. No comment or review is made of the supporting material but it felt jarring to what should have been the core focus of the book.

So you get a couple of dozen recipes and the book is hardly expensive so it could be a great, different cookbook for someone who has everything else. Yet the presence of the "supporting material" felt, at least to this reviewer, to get in the way and made consulting the book more of a hassle than a pleasure. For this alone, it is hard to rate the book much more than average, despite its great potential and scope for being greater.
