5.0 out of 5 stars Gem of the genre, 16 Aug 2012
This review is from: Fabled Lands : The Court of Hidden Faces (Paperback)
It can be said without hyperbole that Fabled Lands is the best, most imaginative and most entertaining fantasy settings ever conceived for the gamebook genre. A lost classic of the 90s, the original editions hit shelves just as the original gamebook boom was winding down, and a combination of ambitious production values and unfortunate timing doomed the half-finished series to undeserved obscurity. The vivid descriptive writing is of a quality that rivals or perhaps even exceeds that of Lone Wolf creator Joe Dever, and the sandbox format make the series massively replayable, with numerous adventures of varying degrees of difficulty to be found in exotic and original environments. The player can end up covered in glory or dead in a ditch, an aimless wanderer or an (in)famous hero. Even with only six books published, there is still a large continent to explore, as well as neighbouring seas and islands, and you can have plenty of thrills and spills with just one book.
Number 5 is probably the best of the series, as the cruel courtesies of the Uttakin, with their byzantine court politics and fanatical religion, are probably the most original and interesting of Morris and Thompson's creations. Play the dangerous game of winning influence amongst the ruthless Uttakin nobility, or try to restore the High King and free Old Harkuna from their harsh yoke...

5.0 out of 5 stars Back at long last!, 15 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fabled Lands : The Court of Hidden Faces (Paperback)
One of the greatest books in the whole Fabled Lands series is finally back in print! The Uttakin lands contain some of the most amazing stories in the realms, including finally owning your own castle. Who wouldn't want that? You can even get involved in the slave trade if you have no heart or humanity left after mixing with the masked denizens of the palace. And have you seen the market in Aku? Do yourself a favour and help contribute to the continued success of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hide your face and dive into this courtly game-world, 16 Aug 2012
This review is from: Fabled Lands : The Court of Hidden Faces (Paperback)
The number of adventures you can have in this gamebook (number 5 in the Fabled Lands series) are incredibly numerous and fun. The authors know how to write prose, too: it's not just that the game system is very well-developed, the paragraphs are also a great read!

Two things I especially like:
1. This gamebook connects to several other books in the series in a surprising and very satisfying way. For example, you can receive a big reward here for something achieved in book 4. And you need to travel to the lands (seas) of books 3 and 6 to finish certain quests.
2. The quest system in this gamebook is multi-layered, meaning that you have to pass certain tests to advance to a next level several times.

Dive into the amazing world of the Fabled Lands, created by a couple of amazing Fabled Lads!

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the best R.P.G you are likley to find, 25 Jan 2001
By A Customer
An excellent R.P.G book, well thought out, the descriptions of locaitions within the book are brilliant, the amount of detail is staggering and the no set ending/multiple plot format is inspired. The books are best if played in order, starting with The War Torn Kingdom. What happened to the last six books in the series?. They are mentioned in the first books, but i've been unable to track them down. If any one knows anything about them please contact me. The first six books are well worth collecting if you can find them, no adventure is ever the same, and reading them is an intensly satisfying experiance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book but where are all the rest, 7 July 2000
By A Customer
This is a book I keep on going back to. It has a cool color map in the back. I have had fun going throughout the lands and being considered royalty. It is a book that I would recomend to anyone who likes fantasy games. The only problem is that I am stuck in one spot so that I can't go any farther until I get the rest of the books. This a good book but I can not seem to find books 3,4, or 6 anywhere. If a place is found to buy these books I'd like to know.

I have got to say, no other gamebook captures the feel that you are in a dynamic world that reacts to what you do.

Your journey through hundreds of paths will always be diffrent in the next play.

The friends and enemies you make on this world are there to salute you in every step of the way.

In one word: Legendary

5.0 out of 5 stars The mysterious court revels itself!, 21 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fabled Lands : The Court of Hidden Faces (Paperback)
Probably the most iconic of the 6 (so far) nations presented in the series (in my opinion), where you can choose to side with the ancient High King to recover his throne or pursue eternal glory through the Court of Hidden Faces (or, help both if you don't like to take sides!). The rewards in this journey are worth the risk and any fabled lands adventurer (or any other adventurer for that matter!) should happily set out to explore these lands.
