5.0 out of 5 stars An informative and indepth look into progressing drills and training sessions., 11 Aug 2012
This review is from: Coaching the Coach 2 - Soccer Coach Development Through Functional Practices, Phase of Plays and Small Sided Games (Paperback)
The original Coaching the Coach (2007) focused on the fundamentals of small-sided games and how to coach technical skills through basic drills, however Coaching the Coach 2 builds on this, and offers ways to improve the knowledge of the coach, as well as progressing drills to get the most out of your players, in both 11-a-side and small-sided games.

Whilst many coaching books seem to follow the bad habit of exclusively focusing on explaining drills and phases of play straight to the players, Coaching the Coach 2 bridges that gap by explaining how certain drills work and how they can implement them in both training and match situations.

Different match situations (such as 'dribbling', 'playing out wide' and 'defending') are clearly separated into easy to read chapters, each of which provide different levels of progression to aid differing ages and abilities. The simple to understand, yet in-depth method of coaching which was present in Coaching the Coach, returns again here. Steps are bullet pointed, advantages and disadvantages of the drills are explained and ways to progress the drill are all included in an easy to understand format. Additionally, the inclusion of images again easily helps to describe each drill to the coach.

The real beauty of the way this book is written however, is the way it doesn't simply tell you what to do as a coach, in that it implores you to think for yourself in how to change the drill. Phrases such as: ''what do you think is so important about the weight and direction of the return pass?'' offers a chance for the coach to use and subsequently increase their knowledge of the situation.

Overall I would undoubtedly recommend this book to any football coach. To relative newcomers, it provides the basic and progressive understanding of many situations, and even to experienced coaches, the book offers tips and skills to hone their coaching abilities, as well as offering alternatives to certain drills and training sessions.

I already had the first book which is more basic but well worth getting especially if you are starting out. This 2nd book goes into more depth and concentrates on and supplies more drills, functions, phases of play etc. Highly recommended but please don't skip the first book if you are new to coaching because it has great info and advice.

This is one of the best coaching books on the market.Obviously written by a coach who believes in the importance of giving technical detail to our young players. Not only that but he has obviously spent time where it matters on the coaching pitch putting over these ideas.

We talk about how we are technically deficient in this country when it comes to producing gifted players. This book will give you a mixture of the art and science of improving your youth players techniques..Highly recommended.

A no-nonsense well written coaching manual with plenty of easy to understand (and thus easy to explain to 13 and 14 year olds) drills and activities.
This is not a magic silver bullet but a comprehensive reference book, use it and it will reward you and your players

This book is ok, it provides some ideas for sessions and how to progress. I recommend working with a mentor and attending courses to gain knowledge and reflect on your sessions to help you develop

Overall a good book with practices of a high standard. I would have prefered a little more explanation as we are "coaching the coach" but it is fairly straightforward to work out!
