5.0 out of 5 stars Set up a therapy business
I found this book to be a well researched, detailed and analytical guide to setting up a business. Starting at a very basic, common sense level, the book provides a step by step procedure from the initial germ of an idea about becoming self employed through to the practicalities of each stage, the setting up of the enterprise and finally the maintaining of a successful...

2.0 out of 5 stars Better off brainstorming
Very disappointing. Generic business advice, with little by way of exploration into some of the dilemmas that are particular to working as a therapist. For example, ethical considerations seem a secondary tag-on to the real business of turning a profit. That said, there is information here about marketing, insurance and so on, and it's all in one place which is...

5.0 out of 5 stars Set up a therapy business, 16 Oct 2010
This review is from: Set Up a Therapy Business: A Step-By-Step Guide (Paperback)
I found this book to be a well researched, detailed and analytical guide to setting up a business. Starting at a very basic, common sense level, the book provides a step by step procedure from the initial germ of an idea about becoming self employed through to the practicalities of each stage, the setting up of the enterprise and finally the maintaining of a successful therapy business.

This book is an excellent `must have' guide for anyone with little or no business experience. It is also a useful checklist for those with more experience, who may only need to skim through the first few chapters, to ensure all bases have been covered.

In a thought provoking way, the book encourages the reader to understand the workings of the therapy market and to know their own place in that market - a vital requirement if the business is to flourish. It is easy to read and understand and offers a contemporary list of resources and website links to provide further support. As well as `holding your hand' through each phase of development, the author also offers the chance of individual support for those with particular issues by providing contact details and promising a response with personalised advice.

Although this book is specifically directed at those setting up a therapy business, many of the steps are transferable using a language and ideas common to all other self employed businesses.

As a woman leading my own successful business I can confirm that the advice given in this guide is sound and invaluable. I highly recommend it to anyone currently in the process of setting up their own business and those still in the contemplation stage.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very disappointing. Generic business advice, with little by way of exploration into some of the dilemmas that are particular to working as a therapist. For example, ethical considerations seem a secondary tag-on to the real business of turning a profit. That said, there is information here about marketing, insurance and so on, and it's all in one place which is convenient It's just that it doesn't offer much more than Businesslink or your bank would offer for free, and the rest is probably less than you'd get for yourself from five minutes brainstorming. Oh, and the Kindle edition is badly formatted with no table of contents.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent book, 11 Oct 2010
This review is from: Set Up a Therapy Business: A Step-By-Step Guide (Paperback)
I would describe Gill's book as a 'everything you need to know' about setting up in business as a therapist. It covers all the basics you need to think about in order to get into business - which is the crucial key step for anyone actually wanting to make a living from a caring profession. I particularly liked that the wisdom in the book is based on research done with a number of existing, successful therapists - i think this gives the information contained real credibility. It's a simple, straight forward, step-by-step approach, that will help anyone to actually go through everything required to set up as a therapist; and doesn't fall into the trap of over intellectualising and becoming an academic exercise. I found the first chapter particularly interesting as it really challenged me as to whether a career in this field would be the right thing for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book, 26 Nov 2010
This review is from: Set Up a Therapy Business: A Step-By-Step Guide (Paperback)
I found this book a very good guide to starting a therapy business - starting with encouraging you to decide whether you really want to commit to long hours getting the business off the ground, and, more importantly whether your family will support you. As the book states, many businesses fail because everything is based on wishful thinking rather than grounded reality. This sort of practical approach is one of the book's great strengths as is the informative nature of the book. It's jam-packed full of useful information on all stages from the process of starting to growing your business. It's good on the scary official stuff too - registering, tax..... It makes it clear and do-able. Jill B.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly simple and comprehensive guide, 19 Oct 2010
This review is from: Set Up a Therapy Business: A Step-By-Step Guide (Paperback)
I found this guide a refreshingly simple and easy to follow guide to setting up a business for someone with no or little previous business experience. It is a step by step guide which takes you all the way through the various elements you need to consider from Market research, building a business plan, setting prices to make a profit and cash flow forecasting. It even has a section on how you can use the website to reach out to new customers. I would also recommend this to people interested in setting up small businesses other than Therapy related ones as it has many sections which may be equally appropriate to them.
