A great read by a man who knows his stuff - and also an interesting history of the change to British industry from control by the original moneyed benign - and not so benign - dictators to the rise and fall of the academics and accountants. 40+ years later and we can still see the dead hand of organisation stifling innovation and independent thought. 2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
I thought the book would be full of anecdotes of the great days, but it hardly mentioned any riders.I expected stories of riders coming to him with structural problems but there weren't any.He barely mentioned Mike Hailwood, though he had ( a welcome change ) a good word for Phil Read. A great read by a man who knows his stuff - and also an interesting history of the change to British industry from control by the original moneyed benign - and not so benign - dictators to the rise and fall of the academics and accountants. 40+ years later and we can still see the dead hand of organisation stifling innovation and independent thought. Somehow Ken manages to weave his way through all the vicissitudes of the decline, keeps busy and in demand by the real customers. A great read!

I thought the book would be full of anecdotes of the great days, but it hardly mentioned any riders.I expected stories of riders coming to him with structural problems but there weren't any.He barely mentioned Mike Hailwood, though he had ( a welcome change ) a good word for Phil Read. Much of the book isn't even about road racing, it instead covers trips abroad with moto cross riders, which I have to admit made me 'glaze over'. Internal factory politics are widely covered, but I'm not sure that many people are interested, and most of us have similar stories to tell.
To be honest, I bought the book out of respect for the man, as I thought he deserved acclaim for his tireless work at the TT races. I still admire him but . . . .

This looks at the technical building of motorcycle frame , by one of the past masters of building these .
This was a present for a pal who had considered buying it in the past but never got round to doing it .
He was very pleased with the book and the technical content

I know nothing about cars but have bought this for my husbands Christmas stocking. Probably an ideal book for someone wanting to build a car or anything that requires a chassis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative reading for all motorcycle enthusiasts., 11 Jan 2013

This review is from: Ken Sprayson: The Frame Man (Paperback)
I must admit to being slightly biased in promoting this book because the author happens to be a friend and acquaintance of mine. But irrespectively, as a motorcycle enthusiast myself, in my tender years, I found it made fascinating reading and it gives an insight into the thoughts and practices that went into the design and manufacture of motorcycle frames from the early 1940's to the present day.
It traces the trials and tribulations, including causes of occasional failures of competitive racing frames which, as is often the case, lead to the improvements and safety of everyday road motorcycles.
