5.0 out of 5 stars just what the wine lover wants to know, 30 Nov 2009
By
This review is from: A Guide to the Wines of Chablis: The Leading Domaines and Latest Vintages (Hardcover)
Why does a wine lover buy a book on wine? Apart from peripheral matters such as history, geology, terroir differences etc. the wine lover wants to know who produces what, how they make it, how good it is and when should he or she actually drink it. Some authors seem not to be aware of these vital motivating factors. Not so Mr Biss. Not that the peripheral matters are ignored; far from it. But the main part of the book answers all those questions that the wine buyer wants to know.In particular, a star rating system leads the reader to the best domaines.Bang up to date and quite simply, an invaluable guide to what to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlocks a treasure trove - tasted & approved !, 12 May 2010
This review is from: A Guide to the Wines of Chablis: The Leading Domaines and Latest Vintages (Hardcover)
If you love fine Burgundy but wince at the ever increasing bottle price of Puligny Montrachet et al, this little gem of a book will unlock the door to a world of (equally ?) fine wine from Chablis at very reasonable (though not cheap) prices. Equally, if you are looking to up the quality level at a more modest level this provides the answer.

I have now tested Biss's ratings on a number of occasions and he has been spot on every time. So much so that I am writing my first Amazon Review. My Chablis consumption has trebled at the expense of other (more expensive) regions of Burgundy. There really are some fabulous wines to discover (is this really Chablis ?). The book itself is amusing enough for a wine lover- it is not one of those glossy coffee table books, or a page turning epic. Rather it a pithy, factual and well-researched book that actually gives you the answer to that crucial question: "What do I buy ?"

Thoroughly recommended for all demanding palates and liquid pleasure seekers !

(Cheeky thought: if you go to friends who like Chablis, but you don't like what they serve, lend them your copy & your visits will be transformed....)
