I picked up this book before I went on a trip to America recently and it really inspired me to lengthen my trip. I was just going to one place on the North East, but ended up touring a few states.
I'm not a biker, but the insight that the author gives into biking, the funny stories, the people he meets along the way, and the drive to keep going made me realise that this life is short. See as much of the world as you can.

I don't think I'll ever take a holiday to the same place again. Too many places to see.

Great read.

This is a great book for anyone who loves the US or bikes or both. Did not want it to end.

A thoroughly enjoyable read which is so well written that you feel you are riding pillion with the author. The true story of a man who got fed up with the daily grind and lived the dream. He upped sticks to America, bought a Harley and the rest you can read for yourself. For me this was a genuinely life changing read, after two children and seventeen years without a motor bike this book brought it all flooding back - freedom, new experiences, places and faces. I have now bought the bike and I am planning the trip. Live the dream - many thanks John.

A great road trip and a good story, but would benefit from the inclusion of a basic trip map and a few photo's
But having done a similar trip starting from Boston and also on a Harly Davidson I found it very enjoyable.
Thank you John.

Regretably I can't share the enthusiasm of other reviewers for this book. John McKay concedes that he's not a good writer and, sadly, I have to agree.
No photos to reinforce those descriptions of people and particularly, scenery and, lamentably, no map!
Following hard on it's heels I read Old Man on a Bike, by Simon Gandolfi. Now there's a book you can't put down. I'm waiting for his account of a return trip he toyed with, back up through South America.
From a Brit on a monster Harley to another on a little 125 Honda. The quality of the books is in inverse proportion to the size of the bikes.

i love books about bike trips - i must have them all! i have also done a trip similar to this. i was struggling throughout with the writing style which reminded me of secondary school comprehension for those of us of a similar age. still managed to finish it!
