5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Balfour takes the angst out of dating
This is a cheery, helpful, practical book for those ready to start dating.

Balfour challenges many of the assumptions that can get in the way of venturing out into dating waters: such as expecting that
- the perfect partner (or even an interesting friend) should somehow just turn up without needing to go looking.
- you're too busy to attend to it...

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I was very disappointed by this book. It is basically a 234-page long advert for her introduction agency - which I've used in the past and was completely unimpressed by. It's full of lots of back-slapping about how she is the most talented match-maker in the UK, together with case studies of couples that she has supposedly personally "matched". Badly written and designed...

This is a cheery, helpful, practical book for those ready to start dating.

Balfour challenges many of the assumptions that can get in the way of venturing out into dating waters: such as expecting that
- the perfect partner (or even an interesting friend) should somehow just turn up without needing to go looking.
- you're too busy to attend to it now.
- by going into it half-heartedly you will protect yourself against disappointment.
- there should be instant chemistry.

Balfour is realistic: there will be rejections and disappointments - but these don't have to be turned into a disaster. She is reassuring that beginning by developing a friendship is a fine way to go; you don't have to leap into bed with all comers.

You may have deliberately gone out there hoping to find someone, but in a way it is not so different than dating in your teens and twenties - when friendships and flirtations may (or may not) develop into something further. It doesn't have to be all agony - it can be fun too.

Mary Balfour has been running Drawing Down the Moon for many years and my husband actually used her services about 35 years ago (before her met me) and found her very helpful. There is nothing she doesn't know about dating and matching people and this book condenses her wisdom into an enjoyable read, full of anecdotes and small pieces of wisdom. Highly recommended.

It's full of lots of back-slapping about how she is the most talented match-maker in the UK, together with case studies of couples that she has supposedly personally "matched". Badly written and designed (it's published by Mary Balfour), the book is dull and has little useful information or tips. I can only guess that the positive reviews on this site were written by some of her employees, who she praises continuously throughout the book. Do not waste your money. No one can claim to be an expert when it comes to matters of the heart, her agency simply introduces people.
