when this book arrived i was surprised that is was more of a pamphlet than a book but after reading,i was not disapointed.
i visited the GDR back in 1984 for a holiday. returned with a very positive view of this country and its ideas to serve its people. i realised it was heavily flawed but many of its ideas i believed to be noble.
family and friends were surprised at my view of the GDR and mostly could not understand my point of view. i bought many books on the subject after the GDRs demise but mostly these showed how rotten the system there was.
this book is the first to acknowledge the positive ideas of the GDR and make me realise that my initial view of the GDR was correct after all.
Of course i and this book acknowledge the very serious flaws of the communist regime but basically this book is saying that it was not all bad and that the modern Europe of today, and indeed the western world could learn a thing or two from the former GDR.
Sadly, as pointed out in this book, anything GDR was got rid of and relaced by western ideas and methods.
A very well written book.
