5.0 out of 5 stars Catholic oppression, 30 Nov 2010

This review is from: The Rising in the North: The Rising of the Northern Earls (Paperback)
Not solely about the oppression and rebellion of the Catholics in the North, it also encompasses a potted history of the Tudor & Elizabethan monarchy and provides a backdrop to the turmoil that began with Henry VIII's split with Rome.
This plunged Britain & Europe into a religious and political divide which ostensibly forced Britain to stand alone against a Catholic Europe.
Concisely written in a highly readable style, it focusses on the north of England's subjugation and uprising against the injustices served by the Anglican south; interestingly it also highlights a collateral oppression of Protestants, as being too far to the left of the line drawn by Henry VIII and continued by Mary and Elizabeth.
It centres on the simmering unrest in Catholic Britain which culminated in the Gunpowder Plot - not covered in this book - but again, a rising in the north against a monarch (James I Stewart) reneging on promises of religious reform.
Lavishly illustrated, with potted biographies of many of the protagonists, and drawing on much recently published literature, as well as 60 years of personal research, this is a welcome addition to any historian's bookshelf - highly recommended.
