For our "I'm worth it" generation this is a glorious memorial of the importance of community. A loving and gloriously illustrated history of the Northumberland Miners' Picnic and the Durham Miners' Gala, it reminds us of how much better is joy celebrated and sorrow borne for their sharing with your friends. Those hosts of banners, ancient and new, reminding us that pride, in the right and plural hands, doesn't need war to be a virtue, and that the riveting sound of the brass bands of plain men is as genuinely music as any concert in gilded halls.
