I read this book at least a year ago and attempted to review it at the time: for some reason my review never reached publication. I am writing again now as I believe it deserves to be better noticed than appears to be the case.
I strongly recommend anyone with an interest in the time of Charles I and II and the Restoration to read this book. It is very well written, carries the reader along and gives a wonderful feeling for the period, together with some unusual insights into the politics and the relationships of Britain, France and the Low Countries. I have only one caveat that prevents me from giving it 5 stars, rather sloppy editing and copy editing here and there: it does not detract seriously from the pleasure of reading the book but it can be a distraction. Nonetheless, I must say "Buy it".
