5.0 out of 5 stars The best Idler by far, 23 Sep 2009

This review is from: The Idler 42: Smash the System (Hardcover)
This is the best edition of The Idler. Past editions have been fragmented and one needed to rummage through each edition to find the good stuff. This one takes the whole concept to a far higher level. It is more joined up and gains focus as a result. The Idler at it's best is entertaining, persuasive and polemical. This delivers on all levels. Not just a good read but a volume one can return to.

Just wonderful. I have read other Idlers, but this is the best so far. Lovely cloth cover and quality paper pages. Great essays encouraging you to live and to have the courage to let go of the slavish daily slog. Inspiring. Buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great mental stimulus, 7 Nov 2009

I have had Idlers before, but stopped a couple of years ago as I thought it had run out of ideas. The new format, a bit more formal and serious, is what I was after. It still has light hearted elements, but is much more philosophical, and has a balance of contributors (not just one sided polemic and diatribe). The new style of printing (on high qulaity paper) and binding (in hard back with plain cloth cover) reflects the slight move up market, and I'd be much happier to read this on the train rather than a picture of a cucumber being massaged between two boobs (a previous cover).

All in all a good book to stimulate thoughts about a more idle life, and a better life. And an improvement on the previous incarnation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, 4 Jun 2010
This review is from: The Idler 42: Smash the System (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book! Packed with interesting essays about how we should be living our lives (but not written in a patronizing fashion like so much of literature today) - primarily by enjoying ourselves, rather than getting caught up in the hype of consumerism, stressed by the media and Parliament. This does genuinely remind you that there is more to life than just buying the next accessory, and acting as a slave to the wage system. I strongly recommend this to everyone, either capitalist or anarchist, liberal or socialist! VIVA LA VIDA!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 3 Aug 2009
This review is from: The Idler 42: Smash the System (Hardcover)
Fantastic. Book of essays and conversations to make you think. Good for dipping in and out of. Alternative visions and ideas for childcare, economics, living, health etc .... Contributions from Alain De Botton, Penny Rimbaud, John Mitchinson, Jay Griffiths, Paul Kingsnorth, Oliver James. A beautiful cloth hardback, really enjoyed reading this and it will be one that stays on my bookshelf.
