4.0 out of 5 stars just read it for its beauty., 28 May 2002

I do not generally read stories by unfamiliar writers. But those illustrations told me to read. And my! what a lovable story. It'll make you think and laugh and smile and feel sad.
It starts with a boy who lived "when there was electric light but no television" and who grows into a ordinary man with a passion for collecting catfood 'labels'.This love which is for him greater than anything else in the world, which turns into an obsession and... A delightful human character presented with equally good prose.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely, if very short, book, 3 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Labels (Paperback)
At only about 30 pages of text and about 30 wonderful illustrations it's not brilliant value [...] but it's marvellous.
de Bernieres book is a tale of a man who collects the labels from tins of cat food. Not a marvellous premise although anyone who has read his previous books will understand how his captivating style can enrapture and delight.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough although I do think it is a little pricy.

It has a lovely light touch, and is very amusing. Will cheer anyone's day up.

Although I had read reviews saying that it was slender etc, I was suprised that it was such a slight volume even though it cost as much as an 'ordinary' paperback. I wouldn't say that the production is that special, I have a feeling that the spine will crack if I open it out.

That said, good for Bernieres if he is the one profiting, I just hope the publisher isn't making a killing at his expense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eccentric and Sweet - pure Louis de Bernieres, 23 Jun 2008

This very short story is both eccentric and sweet and is pure Louis de Bernieres. Based around a young man who finds himself drawn towards collecting cat food labels out of boredom, he then finds it escalating into an obsession as he reaches adulthood. He cannot draw himself away from collecting these labels regardless of the effect it has on his wallet, his relationships and his life. Beautifully told and beautifully illustrated. A joy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A charming gift, 6 April 2007

I love this little book, and gladly read it again and again; which is something the author's full-length fiction doesn't inspire me to do. It's slender, it's beautifully illustrated, it's touching and it is the perfect gift: even for people who don't read a great deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 15 April 2014

Like 'A Day Out For Mehmet Erbil' this is a wonderful little book by De Bernieres, the cover binding is very sturdy for a small book but this is quite expensive for such a small story.
