5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to the birds and sites of this island, 22 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Birding on the Greek Island of Lesvos (Paperback)
Together with the regular updates, this book is a MUST for any birder visiting this island for the first time.
There is general information useful to those not familiar with the Greek islands, although more detail about the weather in spring, when most birders are likely to visit, would be useful.
The site guide and accompanying sketch maps are remarkably accurate and detailed - on many occasions specific sites turned up the promised birds right on cue, which, it has to be said, doesn't often happen with site guides.
The systematic list is comprehensive, listing every bird recorded on Lesvos together with detailed information on status, distribution, and occurence. The book contains a useful index to the bird species, and contains some stunning photographs taken by the author to wet the appetite.
My only real complaint is that stronger binding is needed for future editions; inevitably, this book will be used in the field -my copy started to fall apart after only a week's intensive use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but may fall to pieces!, 9 Oct 2010
This review is from: Birding on the Greek Island of Lesvos (Paperback)
We used this guide with the Dudley guide swopping back and forth between them. Although this is the older of the two it still has extremely useful information and has excellent maps (which handily became loose leaved when the binding broke!) Both books are geared up to Spring watching but the sites are the same for Autumn though apparently not the same numbers or species. However this was not a problem as we have never been in the Spring and as such didn't know what we had missed plus Lesvos is a wonderful island for all nature and there were plenty of dragonflies and butterflies to make up for any lack of bird species. One note: We have been told that the roads and tracks have been significantly improved over the years but there were times when we had to turn back as our little basic hire car was not up to some of the potholes, it did it's best though!
