5.0 out of 5 stars A beginners guide to using lime in construction
What superb value! - and Jane Schofield even sent back an overpayment on the postage.

I am in the building industry (a chartered builder) but did not know anything much about lime mortar as I had never come across its use. This book filled in all the gaps. What types of lime there are, how to mix it and how to use it. In lime wash, in plaster, in rendering...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Handy Pamphlet
It's exactly what it says, it's a good practical guide, but it doesn't cover the use of Hydraulic Lime in bagged powdered form. Very informative if your intending to use lime putty (non-hydraulic lime), though I prefer the Haynes manual titled Period Property which covers the use of both forms of lime and is indispensable for people who are thinking of buying and...

The Claymills Victorian Pumping Station in Burton-on-Trent is being restored by a voluntary charity. We are aware of the differences between lime mortars and Portland cement but this really excellent book gives us the practical knowledge to mix and use lime mortars ourselves. The book is obviously produced by a really enthusiast at a price that we can afford.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does What it Says on the Tin, 27 April 2011

I bought this book(let) while attending a SPAB homeowners course a few years ago. Since then I've spent five years renovating a listed cottage and the book has proved invaluable - what it lacks in size it makes up for in content. It's probably the best practical guide that I've ever come across because it gives you the basic techniques and lets you get on with doing the job. To be fair this does involve a certain amount of hands on learning but the skills and patience that you need when working with lime are best gained by doing the job rather than reading about it, and lime is so forgiving that if you mess up you can usually start again.

Overall, I would say that if you want an exhaustive text with photographs and detailed step by step instructions then it's not for you, but if you've got a little bit of common sense and you're planning on getting your hands dirty then it's great :o)

1.0 out of 5 stars What a real rip off!!, 29 July 2010
This review is from: Lime in Building: A Practical Guide (Paperback)
This is no more than a BOOKLET consisting of 8 double sided A4 in a cheap paperback - a complete ripoff is my considered view.

The contents are amateurish and no more than you can obtain by searching google.

Very very disappointing - I am still looking for a decent BOOK on the use of lime in buildings.

Also Amazon's charges for P&P of this item is unreasonable - I was even sent 2 stamps to offset the costs by the publisher!
