5.0 out of 5 stars A beginner's view of 'Ysart Glass', 14 Mar 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Ysart Glass (Hardcover)
This large book of nearly 200 pages is impeccably produced. It shows 93 items in colour from the Liberty catalog and nearly 300 monochrome illustrations of items from the Moncrieff catalogue. Curiously, in one, Moncrieff have misspelt their own name (Moncreiff)!
The 30 or so large pages of text provide a superbly well researched history of the Ysart family and their life in Scotland. The photographs in this section are intensely interesting and evocative and show the individuals and family in different situations. A bibliography, glossary and time-line further complement the volume.
The main colour plates (219) range in depicting single items (lamps) to a few dozen (paperweights)on each page but each is properly sized to enable excellent detail to be seen and the colours are vibrant and realistic. Some of the works, especially the paperweights, are absolutely exquisite. I can see how, in the dark ages, great skill was regarded with fear. It is difficult to comprehend how these items could be made in any material, far less red-hot molten glass!
To produce this book must have taken an enormous amount of skill, time and effort. The research for the text alone must have been a formidable task.
The only down-side to viewing this volume is the knowledge that you are looking at items that you will be unlikely to live long enough or be wealthy enough to collect one of each. This book is the next best thing.
For a collector of Ysart glass; this is a 'must-have'!
