As a Structural Engineer working in London I bought this as a reference book. It doesn't really function as one. It's a good read but in my opinion a very poor reference book. The proof of the pudding....I don't use it.

If you've ever wondered what was here before the metropolis, why certain streets are the shapes they are, why Pont Street is called that (the French for "bridge") or what that strange large pipe is over your head in Sloane square tube station - look no further!

5.0 out of 5 stars A seminal London text, 15 July 2003
This review is from: The Lost Rivers of London: A Study of Their Effects Upon London and Londoners, and the Effects of London and Londoners on Them (Hardcover)
A fantastically-researched account of the buried tributaries of the Thames. Comes with old illustrations, photos and a beautiful pull-out sketch map of the routes of some of these lost streams. Guaranteed to get you out and about in London.

This review is from: The Lost Rivers of London: A Study of Their Effects Upon London and Londoners, and the Effects of London and Londoners on Them (Hardcover)
This really is the seminal book on the lost rivers of London. I have Tom Bolton's excellent "London's Lost Rivers - a walking guide" which is a well researched and written book, with an interesting presentation on a few key rivers that you can trace the routes of by walking around the city. Paul Talling's "London's Lost Rivers" is a great image driven book, but comparatively weak on factual written information.

Barton's book is probably the best researched and written book - and his map featured as a fold-out insert in the back cover is probably the most useful. The history of how the rivers were used then lost is also spot on. The other books I mentioned might complement it really nicely, but if you buy just one on the subject, this is the one.

This book fitted the bill nicely. With detailed and background information with diagrammatical support, this was just the type of reference source that we needed.

Bought this for my son while he was doing his degree in architecture and read it through myself. Fascinating, it takes you through the history of the many rivers in London, how some have disappeared, how some have been transformed beyond comprehension and how London has evolved and squeezed these rivers into smaller and smaller areas. Enjoy them while you can is all I can say.

One of a number of books around this subject. This one must be the best. So well researched and updated. Extensive detail but also readable.

This review is from: The Lost Rivers of London: A Study of Their Effects Upon London and Londoners, and the Effects of London and Londoners on Them (Hardcover)
I am running out of superlatives to describe these books of old London. My husband loves them as he worked in the city for 25 years and it brings back many memories and also opens his eyes as to what he missed too.
