This review is from: The Country Railway (Hardcover)
While unashamedly nostalgic the author's knowledge of his subject prevents this book lapsing into sentimentality, which ensures it remains very enjoyable for an enthusiast, and the wealth of anecdotes and personal recollections also make it enjoyable for a casual reader. This is not a scientific analysis but a homage to an aspect of the industry that while being hopelessly innefficient was also the life and soul of many small rural commmunities which lost their soul much as mining villages lost theirs when their pit closed. St John Thomas is at his best when he vents his frustration at the wasted opportunities, bureacratic mismanagement and lack of political vision that could have saved so many country rail routes though it has to be said, this would have swept away the unhurried charm and outdated practices in any case. The photographs are fairly random and are easily bettered in interest by the Middleton Press series, and the book eschews timetable information and other detailed statistics, but the writing more than makes up for this. Recommended.
