This review is from: The Brave (Hardcover)
The Brave" is the title chosen by Uncle as the title for his next snuff movie. The "star" of the film is Rafael, a down and out Indian who sells himself, as he has nothing else to offer, to save his family from the absolute poverty in which they scrape an existance. Illiterate, he is ripped off by Uncle's nephew, Larry, turned in to the police for a robbery he did not commit by his brother for the reward money, and ostracized by the towns people because he is an Indian.
The community in which he exists is ignored by even the police because these people have nothing to give, they cannot pay fines, and a term in gaol means that they are fed and clothed so is not a punishment. They spend their time drinking themselves into oblivion and raiding a land fill site for scrap to sell and for the detritis of the working population. No employment is available for these people and they live in old cars and trailers. without as much as running water and electricity, those amenities most of us take for granted until there is a power cut or a drought,
Rafael is a simple, uncomplicated soul, who loves his wife and children and whose only release is his priest, the only man who takes an interest in the community.
A sad, compelling story which can be read in one sitting, I can understand why no less a Thespian than Johnny Depp was inspired to play the role in the film.
This is a great book and should be read by anyone who has a soul. It is not set in Ethiopia or any of the Third World countries which we are so eagre to help, but in the USA, the richest country in the world.
