This review is from: Telephoto Lens Photography (Amherst Media's photo-imaging series) (Paperback)
There are very few cameras today that are not sold from the outset with a zoom lens of some description. It may offer a smaller zoom range or a longer one, on some models approaching 40x but, whatever its range much of it will be at the telephoto end.

Using a longer focal length imposes certain problems. It will magnify the image as captured but it will also magnify the amount of camera shake you will get. For example, if you can hold a camera sufficiently well with a 50mm lens and without image stabilisation being used for a shake-free image at around 1/125 second exposure, you will need to amend the shutter speed to at least 1/500 second if the lens is changed to one of 200mm, and that is disregarding any greater weight that the longer lens may have. If you have image stabilisation, you will have less of a problem but you will still need to change to a faster shutter speed but possibly to a lesser degree.

Although this book was first published around 15 years ago, it is a little out of date as longer focal length non-zoom lenses were still quite common. Now, zooms have almost taken over whatever the focal length needed and the fixed-focal-length ones are less common.

Getting the best from any telephoto lens, zoom or not, is the point of this book. It is part of a very extensive Amherst series which, although thoroughly American, are very worth having if the subject matter is relevant to your needs. It is in need of an update to allow for current preferences, but the principles remain true.

Worth consideration, at least.
