I must admit I considered ordering this book through Amazon but was put off by the negative comments re the print quality by the reviewer below... However I had the good fortune to come across a copy today in a bookshop so could see the quality for myself, and its fine. Maybe not up to the standards of more recent 'Shelter' publications such as 'Homework' and 'Builders of the pacific Coast' books, but considering it's a reprint of a work that dates back to 1978, the quality is certainly on a par with the original 'Shelter' book, and continues in that vein, with plenty of fascinating drawings and photographs of vernacular and self built structures from around the world including barns, yurts, crofts, cottages, adobe huts, houseboats, emergency disaster housing and tents. The articles are all extremely interesting, I particularly enjoyed the Studs Terkel interview with a carpenter and his Zen-like immersion in the process of his craft. Also of note are the lessons learned from experience of Buckminster Fuller stylee 'dome' building, previously championed by the authors, but now considered by them to be impractical when compared against more 'conventional' rectangular self-build designs. The critiques of the then (1978) contemporary US government's hubristic plans to colonise outer space are also a fascinating read and an insight into the concerns of the era. Altogether this book is a classic of its time, but still contains much of practical relevance - a wonderful addition to the library of anybody interested in natural building or 'green' issues in general.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not his best book., 21 April 2012
This review is from: Shelter II (Paperback)
This book like all of Lloyd Kahns books is great. To be honest though it is a lot more technical than his other books: Shelter. And Tiny homes Simple Shelter and all the images are in black and white; no colour drawings or pictures anywhere inside the book which gives it a more scientific school book feel! It doesn't have quite the hippy feeling of his original Shelter book nor does it have all the amazing photos and inspiration in his latest book Tiny Homes Simple Shelter. It is still worth a purchase as its not at all expensive for the wealth of information it contains but do yourself a favour and buy Tiny Homes - that will simply blow your mind.
