5.0 out of 5 stars A children's picture book depicting a natural home birth., 16 Oct. 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Welcome with Love (Hardcover)
This amazingly luscious children's picture book depicts a
gentle, natural home birth on a wild and windy,
fireplace-lit night. Told in a child's voice, it tells of
Mum's fourth baby being born- with the whole family
participating in welcoming the new baby into the world.
The book describes the birth with touching honesty and
realism. The child speaks of his mother's great noises- but
he's not afraid, because she had told him beforehand that
she "might make a lot of noise" but that he mustn't worry
because "that's what it's like when babies are being born",
and that she'll feel better if she yells and screams. The
book even, in absolute respect and regard for the birthing
woman's privacy and dignity, shows the mother in full naked
splendor pushing her baby out, with the family watching with
tears in their eyes, and great love and excitement in their
faces. The mother is shown after the birth with the
umbilical cord still within her; then the placenta is shown
after it comes out (after it comes out on its own accord
without the "routine" shot of Pitocin in the mother's leg, I
must add).
Although there are a few points that I as a birth activist
find fault with- the midwife uses a Doppler (high intensity
ultrasonic waves- not definitively proven safe for babies),
and the midwife "gently pulls" on the cord to aid in the
placenta's expulsion (this can cause hemorrhage)- I still
love this book. It is such a pleasure- such a great sigh of
relief in these hyper-medically managed times where mothers
so often have drugs and surgery instead of gentle peace and
magnificent simplicity.
"Welcome With Love" talks about childbirth with love,
feelings, and great respect. It is a book that dispels birth
fears and misconceptions, and I would be proud to share it
with any child as a way to explain what birth can mean for a
family, for a woman- for a time of beauty, magic and rich
memory. It is about the kind of birth that all women are
entitled to have- and all families are entitled to be part
of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, love, love this book., 16 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Welcome with Love (Hardcover)
This book made me cry! It is beautifully illustrated and the story covers all of the important information for little ones. My 20 month old son really seemed to understand that the baby in my tummy was going to come out and that it would hurt me on the way, but that it was meant to be that way. He asked for the book many times in the run up to the birth. In the end, my entire labour was overnight and my son only arrived downstairs 10 minutes after my daughter was born (following a wonderful home labour and delivery), but I'm sure it still helped him understand what had happened and he's asked for the book a few times since the birth, too. It's fairly expensive, but worth every penny, in my opinion!
