This review is from: Little Birds and Elephants: The Diary and Short Stories of David Macpherson's Wanderings in Portuguese East Africa and Nyasaland 1928-1929 (Hardcover)
Naturally, being a zoologist, I really enjoyed all the natural history observations that your father recorded, and well appreciated the problems he had with identification of species. I was interested that your father spent so much time on bird observations and collecting..... Other very enjoyable aspects of the book are the "essays" by other people - memorabilia and stories - which add to the "flavour" of life in Nyasaland as your father knew it...... I could never shoot an elephant or any other mammal or bird - collection of such animals are for scientific research or survival only - but hunting and shooting was very much a part of life in those days
in Africa and was considered as a perfectly normal pastime.
