4.0 out of 5 stars this book provides a great summary of backcountry snowboardi, 7 Dec 1998
By A Customer
"Backcountry Snowboarding" is a great introduction into reaching beyond the resorts to the backcountry. Included in the book are sections on necessary equipment, avalanche and mountain safety, and riding the backcountry. The book is illustrated and contains a very useful appendix that lists other books as well as internet sights for further information. This book is an invaluable aid for the person who wants to find out how to go about preparing for backcountry snowboarding.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough introduction to avalanche theory., 21 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Avalanche Handbook (Paperback)
For backcountry enthusiasts with a science background, this book provides a thorough introduction to avalanche theory. The book is divided into chapters which build a solid foundation (weather systems, snow structure) through snowpack basics (snow strength and deformation, snowpack structure) and well into more advanced concepts (snowpack analysis, avalanche prediction, search and rescue, and even control with explosives, etc.) It is an excellent, if heavy, read and I found it a valuable resource in the development of an intro avalanche course.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recomended reading, 1 Nov 2004

Few books have been written on the subject of backcountry snowboarding, but thankfully this book covers pretty much everything you would want to know for starting up backcountry snowboarding.
The author (Chris Van Tilburg) has produced an excellent guide to this sport which is educational, intersting and inspirational. His writing style is easy to read, but gives the reader lots of detailed information on a variety of topics from avalanche dangers to snow conditions and types, equipment, route finding, building snow shleters, boards and personal safety beyond the limits of the resort area.
The text is peppered with some great full colour photos, and short real life experiences of the author which make for some good reading. The author is obviously very experienced and loves the backcountry and his enthusiam for the montains rubs off on the reader.
Overall a brilliant book, which will get any snowboarder fired up about backcountry riding. Anyone looking to head out of a resort will find this book a very interesting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars AKA. The 'magnum opus' of avalanche books, 4 Mar 2009
This review is from: The Avalanche Handbook (Paperback)
Gives the complete avalanche story. A thorough, detailed tome that makes more sense once you've read other avalanche books. It fills in the little but important details that lesser volumes mention in passing. Critical reading for all avalanche professionals in the English-speaking world; this is the one that you have to read before embarking on hard-edged vocational avalanche qualifications. There are more accessible books on avalanches but none as complete. Definitely a book you study rather than read; a bit 'chewy' at times, so caveat emptor. Highly recommended.

This review is from: The Avalanche Handbook (Paperback)
Excellent book, havnt read through yet but gives the impression that it covers everything in full academic detail- its been revised over and over since the 1940s. Interesting pictures of snow formations too! If you want to go beyond just being a tourist and actually understand the environment you are skiing / snowboarding in then this is the book.
