5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for bikers and adventurers
I gather this book has become a classic for touring bicyclists. The book was very exciting to read, and I felt as if I was there with Barbara and Larry experiencing their highs and lows. These were real people living a real adventure. In this day of Hollywood personalities, TV lala-land, phony celebrities, flaky sporting events -- Barbara and Larry showed what common,...

Cycling 23,000 miles is a notable accomplishment, but that doesn't mean that one can write about it in an interesting way. Reading this book will tell you more than you want to know about the minor travails of the author and her husband; it will tell you very little about the world they cycled around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for anybody interested in cycling or travel, 8 Jan 1997

This review is from: Miles from Nowhere (Paperback)
Very well written book. Not your usual travelogue. This is a real story. Unfortunately the author was killed in a cycling accident shortly after the book went to press. She was a great writer who really covered the "earthy" parts of the trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful travel tale of adventure and discomfort, 18 Nov 1996

This review is from: Miles from Nowhere (Paperback)
I bought the paperback in a thrift store for 50 cents and had a great time traveling with Barbara and Larry on their around the world bike adventure. The trip was a 23,000 mile globel bike ride. A great read !! Rob Question - Where is Larry today ? Still biking ?

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish you were here?, 3 Jan 2006

This book was really honest but left me feeling sad.
It confirmed what I already knew which is that I along with some others fantasise about doing the big trip (which is why we buy these books!) but really haven't got the nerve. I'm not prepared to give up things like flush toilets in order to see places.
I consider myself quite well travelled but might never have visited some of the places in the book e.g. Egypt if I had read it first. I don't know if Larry and Barb (and Geoff) were unlucky with some of their experiences or whether I have just been too insulated from real life in these places as I only ever went as a tourist.
Essential reading for anyone who fantasises about being a traveller but is really a tourist!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and moving, 3 July 2014
This review is from: Miles from Nowhere (Paperback)
One of my all-time favourite books. A fascinating account about an amazing cycle trip by two lovely free spirits. Incredibly honest about the ups and downs of travelling together in good times and bad. Really well-written too. Head and shoulders above all the other cycling books out there — perhaps with the exception of Ram Ram India which I also loved. All in all, fabulous inspiration for anyone that's thinking about long-distance cycling but is doing it for the experience not because they have got something to prove...

A record of an American couples journey around the world by bicycle.
Full of humour and without skipping the bad bits, this book has the ability to convey the reader with them as they cross several continents.
Traveling in the late 70's, with the world in some turmoil means that not all countries could be visited, as well as the need to jump a few places, but still enjoyable for all that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Homage, 20 May 2011
This review is from: Miles from Nowhere (Paperback)
I first read this book a decade or so ago and I remember vividly how shocked I was to reach the end and read of the author's untimely death in a motor accident on her bike close to her home a matter of months after her safe return from a round the world tour. The knowledge was all the more shocking because of the warm rapport she established with the reader over the 300 plus pages of the book. I closed the book with a real sense of loss and awareness of a life full of promise cut short by a cruel twist of fate.

In a sense then its impossible to review the book and not find myself reflecting on the warmth, vitality and courage of Barbara Savage herself, and the tragedy of her loss for her husband and fellow traveller, Larry. Reading the book again over the last few weeks I was struck again by just how vivid and lively an account the author offers; she has a happy knack of making her engagement with the people she meets central to her adventure. Her humanity and openness shine through the book over its full length. This is much more a book about people and their motivations than it is about bikes and their features and its all the better for that.

This is not to say it was all free wheeling downhill: the trip was clearly a challenge as well as a triumph. Barbara and Larry found their relationship tested in the tough moments of the trip. Her early struggles to cope with the physical demands of riding long days, her dislike of the culture shock experienced in Egypt and India, periods of debilitating ill-health and bouts of isolation and recurring
homesickness take their toll on her enthusiasm and on the pair's relationship. However, they come through all these challenges intact, in large part due to the author's strength of will, sense of humour and spirit of adventure. In these aspects the book is truly inspirational.

This is a book full of American, 'can-do' verve and spirit. The reader cannot but be impressed by the, 'let's get on with it' approach of Barbara and Larry. Some of the descriptions are quite harrowing: some raise unsettling doubts about the cultural expectations of Americans abroad; however, these concerns fade in the face of the reader's liking for the heroine and hero at the heart of this saga and admiration for what they achieved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only A Third Of the Way Thorough BUT ......................., 14 Oct 2009
This review is from: Miles from Nowhere (Paperback)
Funny how some require a literary masterpeice in EVERY book they read. I not even gotten half way through this book and I'm already hooked! I REALLY like the way this book is written. Very "colloquial" which to me makes it an easy to get lost in read. Here's hoping that the surviving Larry Savage is going great guns today ! GREAT BOOK,LEGENDARY CYCLISTS !!...............................Got to the end of this book and can only say..................BRILLIANT !!!!

I read this book just before leaving on a 4500 mile bicycle trip across the United States. Nothing could have prepared me better or opened my mind more for the fantastic adventure that was ahead of me. The book made me laugh out loud 100 times for the author's undeniable love of life. And it made me cry nearly as often for her tragic death.
