5.0 out of 5 stars Time will prove this to be one of the all time classics!, 3 Jan 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding the Bird of Prey (Hardcover)
Dr Nick Fox is one of the World's leading breeders of birds of prey and has assisted conservation organisations with the breeding a release of endangered birds of prey. Nick Fox is also considered to be one of the leading falconers in the UK today, specialising in rook hawking.
This book takes the reader through the biology of birds of prey, their breeding, hunting and the training of raptors for falconry, the most noble of all field sports. The book draws on years of experience and research and gives a view of raptors from both the captive and wild aspects. Any serious Falconer/Austringer should read tihs book. However, don't just borrow this essential source of reference, buy it and keep it at hand. In fact, purchase before any other book on the subject!

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for serious falconers, 30 May 2003

This review is from: Understanding the Bird of Prey (Hardcover)
I haven't been able to put this book down since receiving it. For anyone interested in providing the best care for their bird this book is a must. The subjects covered include a detailed insight of the biology of the bird of prey, extremely important for understanding why a bird behaves in the way it does and how to work with and get the best out of a magnificent creature which can never be referred to as domesticated. All aspects of care and training are covered, along with interesting information about falconry throughout the world both past and present.
Understanding the Bird of Prey will be of interest to both those who are merely enthralled by the amazing ability of the falcon to fly at incredible speed with deadly accuracy and also to the falconer who wants to get the most out of their bird when hunting.
For the experienced falconer there is information on breeding, adverse publicity and legal matters. There is even information on hawking dogs and the exciting practice of hunting in groups.
Truly a wonderful book which is a must for all interested in this truly rewarding, environmentally friendly past time.

This is a great book for learning about birds of prey in detail. It includes their anatomy, how they fly etc.

It sometimes assumes you know some falconry terms that a beginner might not necessarily know......that is probably the only bad comment I have to make about this book.

It is like the bible for keepers of birds of prey, and very informative for inexperienced students of falconry.

A book you will be able to refer to for many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it!!, 27 May 2013
This review is from: Understanding the Bird of Prey (Hardcover)
Whether you're just starting out and don't know anything about falconry, or a seasoned pro looking to widen your understanding, you will benefit massively from this book.
I strongly urge ALL beginners to buy this book and Jemima Parry Jones Training Birds of Prey (which is inferior to this book, but well set out for a beginner though) BEFORE buying a bird. You have no excuse, and have every reason to use the priceless knowledge Nick Fox's accumulated years of experience. Buy it now before it's too rare!!

Bought this for my son following a bird of prey experience at Norfolk Falconary, he loved it - it gave him lots of interesting information and he now wants to have his own owl, but reading the book has also made him realise it is a long term commitment and lots of hard work so he will wait until he is older and had more experience. Great book
