5.0 out of 5 stars STILL ALIVE & WELL....., 13 Sep 2010
This review is from: Raisin' Cain: The Wild and Raucous Story of Johnny Winter (Paperback)
Johnny Winter has lead a very colourful and interesting life. His career hasn't always been looked after as it should have been and if he is guilty of one thing it is trusting people who do not deserve it. Thankfully now Johnny's career is where it should be, being handled by people who genuinely care about the man.

This book provides a warts and all account of his life, told to the author first-hand by by the man himself and those who were closest to him, throughout the past (more or less) 50 years. Rick Derringer (who appears with only quotes attributed to other sources) is only main player who either elected to not contribute or was not asked (which I can't believe).

Mary Lou Sullivan, the only person Johnny would trust to document his life story, has done a superb job against the odds, thanks to the reluctance of his long standing manager, to collate Johnny's story, following their first meeting in 1984 through until 2009 (although their friendship continues to this day).

Raisin' Cain is an informative and inspiring read that really provides an insight in Johnny life and music career. Seemingly nothing has been omitted, which is how Johnny wanted it, and I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone with and interest in Johnny Winter, blues/blues-rock guitarists or unique musicians of any kind.

What are you waiting for.......

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!!!, 16 Nov 2010

If you're a Johnny Winter fan this book is for you. The truth at last! So many great road stories and some very sad and disturbing stories about how his management handled him. It's not as detailed as the Hendrix/Henderson bio but it's still a very well presented account of Johnny's life. It reminded me a little bit of Randy Poe's bio of Duane Allman. Delighted I know the truth about Johnny now. Rest in peace Johnny.

Really interesting read and insight into a great but not appreciated widely enough blues guitarists. One of the greats. Would recommend this book. Didn't realise he played and had such an influence on so many other great guitarists.

This review is from: Raisin' Cain: The Wild and Raucous Story of Johnny Winter (Paperback)
This is a 'must read' book for all fans of the late, great Johnny Winter. It has many truly revealing interviews with the man himself as well as others with those closest to him. As a lifelong fan, I thought I knew a lot about Johnnys wild life, the truth is, I didn't know the half of it! A++++

Excellent read. I'm really enjoying this well written biography of how Johnny, with indomitable spirit, overcame the odds growing up as an albino in red-neck Texas to make it in the dog-eat-dog music business and survive as one of the finest guitar players of all time. A must for all blues fans...

This is a well written book with lots of input by Johnny Winter who i feel is a much underrated blues musician.
Full of happy, sad and somewhat tragic tales e.g bad management, drug taking, hip replacements, but what a determined man!
Definitely worth a read.
