2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Agreed, Everett Ruess' story is pretty amazing. It is also quite fascinating that some places he visited were barely known 70 years ago, while others don't exist anymore as he knew them (Glen Canyon).

Agreed, Everett Ruess' story is pretty amazing. It is also quite fascinating that some places he visited were barely known 70 years ago, while others don't exist anymore as he knew them (Glen Canyon).
Still, this does not mean that his letters or his journal makes great reading.
There are some interesting bits, but too often he's just giving every day news about himself to his family, what he ate, whom he met, his money issues etc.
At least the letters are well written, as they must be read by others. But his journal is nearly written in short hand and makes dull reading sometimes.
I was expecting descriptions of amazing places.
The best bits are Rusho's contributions. Krakauer's chapter on Ruess in "Into the Wild" may even be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing book full of passion., 3 Aug 1998

This review is from: Ruess Everett: a Vagabond for Beauty (Paperback)
The story of Everett Reuss is an exceptional story of a most exceptional individual. Reading his letters one can really feel what it is to be alive. His passion, insight and courage are an inspiration to us all. To live life as Reuss did would be an honour. To escape the world and test one's abilities through one's own self reliance seems to be something of the past. In this media age we cannot fully understand the simplicity that Reuss lived his life. Vagabond for Beauty is an example of that simplicity. Reuss' ever present lust for life is fully evident in all of his letters. Reuss lived his life on the fringe and showed others just how amazing life really can and should be.
