5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding, Valuable Reference
This thoroughly researched reference will greatly improve your writing, and free you from arbitrary restrictive rules that make your writing seem stilted and artificial. Every recommendation is supported by a careful analysis of numerous examples of actual writing. It exposes the myths of English usage, and does away with made-up rules that no one follows except...

3.0 out of 5 stars Unsuitable for a (Samsung) tablet.
Don't buy this to use it on a Samsung tablet. Kindle is a rather poor system for reference books in any event, but awful in this combination. Two examples - you can't turn to the index page, you have to "bookmark" it and then go to the bookmark, and then start going through the several pages of index to the section of the alphabet you want.
Secondly, it...

Every recommendation is supported by a careful analysis of numerous examples of actual writing. It exposes the myths of English usage, and does away with made-up rules that no one follows except high-school English teachers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly useful, informative, and fun!, 6 Feb. 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage (Hardcover)
A distinguishing feature is the intelligent, restrained wit of the entries. The thoroughness of the citations is exemplary. Where else can one read almost two full pages on the phrase 'as to' and really enjoy it?

Secondly, it always asks you if you want to pick up at the furthest page you were reading -of course not, it's a reference book, not a novel. Duh.
These problems are overcome with relative ease on a desktop - disastrous on a tablet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than "Modern English Usage", 26 Aug. 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage (Hardcover)
The book is clear, readable, thorough, common-sensical, and not snooty. It's better than Fowler's "Modern English Usage," the first two editions and Burchfield's, because it doesn't try to be a dictionary, a guide to writing, and a guide to word usage: You can't get there from here. Mr. Gilman, the editor, wisely (and with a restrained wit) limits the book to advice on word usage. (F.E. Keyes, Jr./Senior Editor, BDM International--Arizona)

1.0 out of 5 stars a speciously reasoned defense of bad usage, 29 Mar. 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage (Hardcover)
Whatever advice you find here that is different from advice you might find in a conventional grammar book is advice you should not follow--if you want to appear reasonably literate to reasonably literate readers, at least. Get hold of a conventional grammar book, say, "The Elements of Grammar". Get hold of a good dictionary, an American Heritage first edition (if you can find it). Get hold of Strunk and White's "The Element of Style". Get hold of the second edition of Henry Fowler's "Modern English Usage" (edited by Ernest Gowers). You're set.
