5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Introduction
I read "Futhark" for the first time (I still regularly refer to it) around 1986, having previously read and immediately rejected the 'New Age', unscholarly nonsense of Blum et al. 3.0 out of 5 stars Runic Knowledge
A decent and informative but rather dry book about the Runes. Lots of scholarly material here, but all used in view of practicing runic magick. What is ancient lore and what are new ideas is not seperated very clearly, but it provides a solid basis for any pagans interested in the sibject.

I read "Futhark" for the first time (I still regularly refer to it) around 1986, having previously read and immediately rejected the 'New Age', unscholarly nonsense of Blum et al. "Futhark" remains the best available introduction to Rune magic. While one should read from many sources (including other works by the same author), this work holds the kernel of all the techniques one needs to follow and practice the path of Rune Work. Much has been written concerning Thorsson's/Flower's adherence to other cults and it must be admitted that this led to schism between the author and the Odinic Rite. Personally, I believe that what Edred gets up to elsewhere is his affair. Technically speaking, this book is still the best introduction. If you are seriously interested in the runes, read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Edred Thorsson is *the* definitive Rune Master., 22 May 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Futhark: Handbook of Rune Magic (Paperback)
An absolute must have for anyone serious into the study of Runic Magick! Edred may be dry, and scholary, but that is what is needed for serious study of the runes. Any book by Thorsson is highly recommended. If you can tolerate his arrogance, then you too can learn from the master, I have, and this is one of the first books I give to my students who are serious about the runes. Leave Ralph Blum for the airy-fairy, all-is-light, I-don't-care-what-the-facts-are, no-nothings.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good sourcebook for Runic knowledge, 11 Jan 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Futhark: Handbook of Rune Magic (Paperback)
Futhark is an excellent companion book to Runelore in that
it represents the practical information and facts about
using the runes where Runelore is a more high level
esoteric text. It can be dry reading all the way through
due to the amount of defining done, but as a sourcebook for
runic working it is almost indispensable.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULLY WRITTEN, EXCELLENT INFORMATION!, 11 Jan 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Futhark: Handbook of Rune Magic (Paperback)
Edred Thorsson, the Drighten of the Rune-Gild, is without a doubt the leader in teaching modern Rnecraft. This book, although written in the mid 70's, has stood the test of time. It is written with the clarity that anyone, novice or adept alike, can access and use the material contained within its covers. Well worth double its current price. I advise you to purchase other titles by Thorsson, and even join the Rune-Gild. May Odin grant you wisdom, may Thor protect you, and may Loki give you laughter along your journey through the 9 worlds!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very scholarly but lots of dubious speculative material, 2 April 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Futhark: Handbook of Rune Magic (Paperback)
This book is written by a very experienced historical linguist and practicing Norse pagan. The former means he won't miss any known information about the runes, but unfortunately the latter means that he has lots of speculative material of the own which he mixes in with his scholarship. This wouldn't be so bad, but he rarely bothers to tell you which is which, so if you want to know the strictly historical facts about the runes, this is definitely NOT your book.

I would recommend this book as one of the first 'textbooks' for anyone interested in rune magick. I always suggest it to beginners.
It explains the history, the process of using runes for magick and divination and also gives some interesting insight into the Norse culture as whole. It's a good book to start your spiritual runic journey with.
