5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece: enjoyable and appealing, 15 Feb 2013

This review is from: The Enormous Room (The Cummings Typescript Editions) (Paperback)
Linguistic mastery and dry humour at its best - both making the message of the novel all the more chilling. For its urgent appeal to humanity, this is a classic alongside E.M.Remarque, Ernest Hemingway, Alexander Solzhenytsyn, Primo Levi or Simon Wiesenthal. It is probably the most easily accessible of Cummings's work and I would recommend it to anyone who is being introduced to Cummings' writing and may feel put off by the complexity of his poetry.
This is one of the books one keeps reading over and over and never ceases to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The enormous room, 7 Nov 2011
This review is from: The Enormous Room (The Cummings Typescript Editions) (Paperback)
An account of Cummings' incarceration in a French prison during World War One- a clear case of "guilt by association." This book is very readable, dryly funny and the use of language is amazing. Have you ever thought of anyone "wearing" a hand?
An excellent book.

An account of his time held in the "enormous room" of the title ..
Cummings gives us a rare view of humans surviving in situations that are completely out of their control.
The acceptance, the simple kindness, the beauty of the most damaged people .. Cummings describes with a depth of feeling that uplifts. . . gives hope.
I almost felt regret when he was moved and I'd not "see" the characters and the room again.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must-read for cummings' fans, 18 Feb 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Enormous Room (The Cummings Typescript Editions) (Paperback)
This book gives so much insight into cummings, not to mention it's just a great book. The characters are amazing; he certainly has a way with them. Totally great, and eaiser to read (a.k.a. understand quickly) than most of his poetry! (His other novel, Eimi, is also extememly interesting, but very difficult to read. It's like 200 pages of his wackier poems.) I would say, if you really want to get to know cummings, you have to read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An ode to common humanity in the grip of petty tyranny, 9 Mar 2013

This is a superb allegory of the human condition under authoritarian regimes. Above all, Cummings shows with immense warmth and fellow-feeling the mixture of pettiness, selfishness and acts of decency that is life in captivity, and he holds officialdom and its bullying minions up to withering scorn.
