4.0 out of 5 stars The macabre at its very best!, 2 Mar 2007
This review is from: Everything That Creeps (Hardcover)
If you are unfamiliar with the work of Elizabeth McGrath then this book is a great way of bringing you into her world of strange, grotesque but ultimately beautiful sculptures.

Liz's sculptures are generally shown in shadow box form, though she does create free standing pieces too. Each art piece is intricate and each time you view the images in this book you will see something different every time.

There's little to no text throughout this wonderfully illustrated book (with the exception of the intro). Each page is a delight with large images of each sculpture and a more detailed image homing in on specific areas of each piece.

Although I'd like to say this book would make a fabulous coffee table read. I would hasten to add that it's probably not for the eyes of the very young (may cause a few sleepless nights!)

I can highly recommend this book to fans old and new. The only criticism would be that there's not any supporting information on how the artist creates her work or how she comes up with each character. And some of the images of the finer detail are slightly blurred.

Overall this book is a work of art in itself. Prepare yourself to be drawn into the dark, mad world of the fantastic Ms MGrath.

This review is from: Everything That Creeps (Hardcover)
A book composed pimarily of pictures of diaromas, taking the surrealistic ethic out of the 2D picture and placing it into a 3d frame. Has a weird feminine twist to worlds of night time subconscious reveries. Bodies of creatures arising from the deep trenches of the Pacific, provided with legs and arms inhabiting the worlds we all twist and shout within. Explores, for me, the angst of self harm and anorexia in a journey into childhood memories as the artist, similar to Ray Caesar taps into a life force composes of the building blocks of childhood and then reworked the energy to depict the real world built on the bricks.

Suffused with a carnival atmosphere, the diaromas work their magic, taking a cue from the Day of the Dead Mexicana they head into the Black Forests of Europe to bring out the Grimm fairy tales of yesteryear and instead of playing the victim, the characters reap their rewards.

The ideas are basic but as with all the best art, the imagination which composed it is highly complex.
