5.0 out of 5 stars A good readable synthesis of US Unconventional Oil & Gas, 8 July 2014

This review is from: Cold, Hungry and in the Dark: Exploding the Natural Gas Supply Myth (Paperback)
A remarkably easy read, distilling historic energy demand & gas production data to really good effect. The translation of the principal plays, exploration policy and practice leads the author to effectively question the long term ability of unconventional gas production in the US meeting demand, when Canada as a leading provider is likely to reduce supplies. The forensic style of analysis outlines the claims of explorers likely reserves estimations and well decline curves, the extent of shale plays & the explorers dawning realisation of the relevance of sweet spots. This ultimately leads to a warranted challenge of the US Energy Information Administration estimated reserves. The author provides an interesting and looming analogy back to the energy crisis of the late 1970's. Some solutions are suggested, but the bottom line is that US gas prices will increase as demand strains the depleting supplies.

A must read for those with an interest in energy supplies, data/resource management, students, the markets or perhaps just buying a new boiler (damn!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent book, 9 April 2014

This review is from: Cold, Hungry and in the Dark: Exploding the Natural Gas Supply Myth (Paperback)
This book covers the subject of (shale) gas production in the US.
This is an extremely important subject, although most people are not aware of the issues involved, nor of its importance for the overall economy.
Even if some recognize the importance of the subject, most will just blindly believe the hype that has been created around the "shale revolution". But that hype is just a lie.
This book is really well written, and very well researched.
I recommend it without reservations.
