5.0 out of 5 stars Mouth Watering, 9 May 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Between Meals: An Appetite for Paris (Paperback)
This hilarious gastronomic coming-of-age is set in Paris, where Liebling was a student in the 1920s, and where he did what any sensualist in Paris does: spends all his dad's money on food (and let's not forget the cognac and wine). His descriptions of the oddball people he meets are original and sharp. You can't read this book and not want to eat, you can't read it and not laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars paris and food - what more do you want, 28 Aug 1998
By A Customer
A wonderful book. Something to savor. A book that I could not part with. A book you can go back to read a chapter again. I was so happy to find someone else had taken time to write a review

5.0 out of 5 stars Innocence meets Indulgence, 8 Aug 2007

J. Harrison (Brighton, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Between Meals: An Appetite for Paris (Paperback)
As you will see if you check out my other reviews, I collect recipes, cook books etc. As a result of this, and Amazon's somewhat hit-and-miss classification of books, one sometimes comes across a gem like this.

Unlike `Dear Francesca' or `Barefoot in Paris', THIS IS NOT A COOKERY BOOK. Nor does it contain recipes or recommendations for places to eat or shop for foodie things.

That said, it is a wonderful book. A story which drags you in and pulls you back to a time and a Paris long departed. I read this book in a day and loved every minute of it. As a committed Francophile and devotee of all things Parisian, I was spellbound.

As someone who has only ever encountered Americans in Paris as condescending oafs (at best) and loudmouthed bores (at worst) I am suitably humbled by this tale of innocence and passionate longing to understand another culture.

A book I shall doubtless enjoy dipping into again and again, It now sits on my mantelpiece alongside the remarkable and not totally dissimilar `Resident Alien' by Quentin Crisp. In my household, there is no higher honour than that.

4.0 out of 5 stars charming exposition of the good life in Paris, 19 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This slim volume exudes charm and decadence. It is perfectly written, and evocative of a bygone era, when one could move to Paris without money and experiment with the finest wines and cuisine. Entertaining, obsessive, delightful

5.0 out of 5 stars Belle Epoque, 22 Dec 2013

Last chapter is a tour de force. The insight into the way men view women at that age is breathtaking. The other stuff about food and wine was also hugely entertaining and fairly historically enlightening.

A glorious celebration of dining in Paris in the first half of last century. Liebling writes wonderfully well. This has been compared to Hemingway's book, I find it better.
