5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book for medical students and non psychiatrists, 23 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Psychiatry at a Glance (Paperback)
This book is truly an essential part of every medical students library. I found this book whilst doing my placement in psychiatry and whilst it in no way covers the depth of information that Gelder's book does, it is well presented and by far the most approachable book on the market. It uses summaries to provide the absolute minimum information needed on a subject then follows this up with a more in depth piece which adds flesh to the bones of the summary. The only area of criticism I can think of is that the section on drugs is a little too simplistic even for students, and could be expanded a bit. I used this book to get me through finals as my main revision text and got a distinction, and whilst I can't promise that, it is an essential book.I feel it would also be useful for doctors who don't work in psychiatry full time but come into contact with the mentally ill regularly, although those in the field require a more in depth read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential book for all medical students, 30 Jun 2004
This review is from: Psychiatry at a Glance (Paperback)
This book is very concise, but also pretty comprehensive. It manages to cover almost everything you'll need to know for psychiatry finals, despite being so slim. Amazingly, it's actually also really good at explaining concepts so the reader can understand them properly. This is probably the only psychiatry textbook you will need for medical school and psych finals, but of course you should always check the latest BNF for up to date info on treatments.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic textbook, 27 Mar 2008

This review is from: Psychiatry at a Glance (Paperback)
This book is ideal for an easy to read, concise overview of psychiatry. I have tended to like the 'At a Glance' series of books, as they manage to give a lot of information with little effort in reading them, and this book is no exception. I read this as a non-psychiatrist in preparation for training in psychiatry, to revise the subject as it is a while since I left medical school. This was ideal, as it is not overfacing and has brought my basic knowledge up to date. Yes, it does not go into great depth and detail, but is a stepping stone to get a feel for psychiatry and quick revision aid before moving onto more complex texts
