This review is from: Among God's Giants: Puritan Vision of the Christian Life (Paperback)
A great book on the Puritan vision of the Christian life. Packer is a good writer and a real expert on his subject, especially on Baxter, the subject of his doctoral research. Here we learn why the Puritans were spiritual giants. A book to challenge contemporary evangelical pygmies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Packer on Puritans, 8 Sep 2010
This review is from: Among God's Giants: Puritan Vision of the Christian Life (Paperback)
If you like Packer, the Puritans and church history, you will love this book. The book contains 18 essays covering the Puritans in profile, on the Bible, the gospel, the Holy Spirit, the Christian life and in ministry. John Owen gets a number of chapters, Jonathan Edwards gets one, and, as you might expect, Richard Baxter frequently crops up.

About half the essays were originally delivered at the Puritan Conference. As a regular attendee of the successor conference, the Westminster Conference, I was interested to compare the style of papers then and now. Packer's papers strike a middle note: neither as light reading as some, nor as intensely footnoted as others. They certainly show his Anglican sympathies, which is not often the case at the conference these days! Consequently he is less open about Puritan opposition to Episcopacy than was really the case and the frequent references to Baxter, who was not representative of mainstream Puritans, means that other views should be sought to balance some issues.

The essays provide a fine Christ-centred, theologically rich account of Puritan thought. There are frequent applications to Christians and the church today from which those who have at least a modest grounding in the Puritans will greatly benefit.
