This review is from: Piers Plowman: A New Annotated Edition of the C-Text NEW EDITION (Exeter Medieval Texts and Studies) (Paperback)
Many people prefer the B-text, the A-text often being criticized as incomplete, an early draft, which it was, and the C-text often being criticized as over-edited. I tend to agree, preferring the B-text. However, this edition of the C-text is excellent. The introduction sets well the stage for the main text. The extensive footnotes explain and interpret the less easy lines. Side translations also aid reading, as does the glossary.

Many books on the Visions of Piers the Plowman treat only Passus 1 through 8. If you were ever left wanting more, the C-text offers a further 14 Passuses (Passus, Passi?), all equally well edited in this 1994 edition.

Those folk who prefer the B-text (or even the A-text) will be gratified by the references in the footnotes to the differences among the texts.

Piers Plowman is, in many ways, a challenging text. If you need to understand the C-text, this edition is certainly worth considering. And that understanding is essential to any study of mediaeval dream poetry.

Bought as a present for a friend. I already have my own copy, which supersedes Pearsall's earlier edition (also much loved).
