An excellent book with lots of down to earth tips. I have been growing vegetables for over twenty years now and still found many interesting facts and new ways to grown things.

very clear, informative and well laid out. this is when reference books come into their own on the kindle, so easy to search for exactly what you need and to cross reference. and plus no digging in the garden!! its all good......

If you only ever buy one book about vegetable gardening - buy this one by Charles Dowding. Packed with clear, concise information about how to lay out beds, composting and how and when to sow and grow a terrific range of vegetables. I wish I owned this book years ago and can't wait to buy his other books. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Glad I found this book because it's easy to follow. I want to start a veg. plot from scratch and this looks like the ideal book for me. Plus how to plan the plot etc. Now I can get on with the project.

I've been growing vegetables for a few years and wanted to become more Eco-friendly in my approach. As the title suggests this is supposed to be an organic gardening book. However I found the book much more about the no dig way. I understand this is in the subtitle but I think it's important to point this out. The organic principles could have been developed more.

Nonetheless, this didn't distract from the quality of the content. I've learned loads and intend to use many of the authors tips next year. In fact I read the book front to back! Pay attention to the varieties he suggests as I'm a big believer in trying different varieties.

Would I recommend this book?

Absolutely, my favourite vege book to date and you don't need any experience as the basics are well covered. 4 out of 5 for the misleading title, 5 out of 5 for content.

This is a good book, with much useful information. Dowding is not the originator of the no-dig approach to gardening, but he has done a lot to popularise it, and to demonstrate its effectiveness. Quite a bit of the book is taken up with an explanation of the philosophy behind his approach e.g. Using compost as a mulch to keep down weeds, as well as feeding the soil. There are also sections on each group of fruit and veg, with sections on the major crops such as beetroot and onions. Whilst I do recommend this book, it is not without fault. He omits less common crops such as root parsley, and he only mentions a few recommended varieties for each plant. That said, these are minor quibbles. The key message, that there is no need to dig, and that an organic no dig approach is not only easier, but better for you and wildlife is put across in a convincing manner. I have gone over to no dig, and had few weeds to clear, and excellent harvests. It works.
