5.0 out of 5 stars curiously riveting
This is a very odd book. It's not great literature. It's not a revolutionary leap forward in the genre of military Sci-Fi. There are no startling revelations. The plot is transparent. The space battles are repetitive. There are cloistered nuns who have a better grasp of tactics than the commanders of the opposing space fleets. The military situation is ludicrous -...

Wee bit boring at points. Although the depiction of the final battle was good. Decided to give the second book a chance before I give up on this series.

This review is from: The Lost Fleet: Dauntless (Book 1) (Lost Fleet 1) (Paperback)
This is pretty much battlestar gallactica in book format, but more boring than the tv series.
Without ruining the book, this is the whole story line of this book:

Battle
Jump
Battle
Jump
end

You wont get that part of your life back reading this book

4.0 out of 5 stars Doc Smith lives, 7 Feb 2011
I appreciate some of the criticisms but this is an absolutely cracking read. Yes, you do realise it's Xenephon's "Anabasis" by page 16, and it's full of recognisable references: Hughes' "Fleet Tactics", a couple of books on reciprocal atrocities in the Pacific war, and of course E E 'Doc' Smith's space battles in the "Lensman" series (awful but for heaven's sake, written in the 1930s) but still, excitingly written and you do want Black Jack to succeed. Bought it at lunchtime, finished it by early evening, and enjoyed it hugely.

This book is really really bad. The story is unbelievably predictable. Even the space battles are unimaginative. Dialog is simple, boring, unreal and in some points ridiculous. Characters have no depth. I felt while reading the book that it was writen by a 14 year old with no deep life experiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lost Fleet: Dauntless, 11 Dec 2006
It has been a long time since I have been utterly gripped by a book and have had to re-read it almost as soon as I have put it down. A great storyline with a gripping and utterly believable cast of characters that left me wanting for more. Cannot wait for the next book to come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Science fiction as it should be., 22 April 2007
Well written, good storyline, well thought out action and some sub-plots that should provide good follow on material. Excellent read for folk who like SF in the traditional vein.
