5.0 out of 5 stars "The Life of Rebecca Jones", 30 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
"The Life of Rebecca Jones" informs us of a truth that is moving and eternal.
To-day`s urbanised, materialistic world provides for many, a void ; the background
and foundation of Rebecca`s life in the countryside are fundamental and real,a wholeness.
This was a beautifully written book and sympathetically translated from the
original Welsh. Do not, however, conclude that this story is parochial- it
is universal.
I strongly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Life of Rebecca Jones, 30 July 2012
Just finished reading the English translation of The Life of Rebecca Jones. It is a lovely book. I've ordered two copies to give as presents. Beautiful descriptions of a family's rural life in Wales in the twentieth century. It shows the freedom and also the constrictions of that life, especially for women.

5.0 out of 5 stars 21st Century Literary Classic - read this incredible book., 5 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I don't want to gush about this slim, unassuming volume, but I urge everyone, everyone to read this incredible book.

The prose imagery which sets the scene at the beginning of each of the chapters is a truly inspirational, rooting the reader comfortably and deeply in the sparce landscape of the Welsh Hills. The trials, the daily continuance of life, death, hard work, tragedies, sacrifices and forbearance coupled with the ever encroaching spectre of the modern world - how will the family cope after working the land for a thousand years?

Rebecca is 'our' guide, 'our' sister and 'our' fast friend, negotiating with knowing footsteps through the geography of both the Maesglasau valley and her family. The twist at the end of the book astounded me.

A special thank you Lloyd Jones the translator for bringing this wonderful literature to this English reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story beautifully presented book, 18 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the most charming story of life in a Welsh Valley, where Rebecca can trace her ancestry back a thousand years! It is beautifully told with the extremes of farming and family hardship against the tranquil valley where little happens and life moves repetitively from one generation to another. I love the twist as the end as Angharad Price keeps Rebecca so alive and vivid throughout.
