5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative. Not a workshop manual, 17 May 2013

This review is from: NASA Mars Rovers Manual: 1997-2013 (Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity) (Owners' Workshop Manual) (Haynes Owners' Workshop Manuals) (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book and a great example of when not to judge a book by it's cover.

I was concerned that it really would be an attempt to make an owner's workshop manual, for something I'll never own and is millions of miles from the nearest spanner, fortunately however it's nothing of the sort.

Inside this is a sensible and thorough description of the history and workings of the Mars Rovers, with some information about their predecessors, the development of the Rovers and their performance when they got to Mars. The balance between pictures and text is good, there are numerous colour photos and diagrams.

The author has also written some other space related Haynes manuals, such as for the International Space Station, which has been highly rated by others. I'm looking forward to reading that next.

An excelent book, that does a great job of descripting the evolution and developement of the Mars rovers. Particulary enjoyed finding out about all the problems and sacrifices made to shoehorn everything needed into these amazing pieces of technology.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific technical detail but a little overwhelming in places, 29 Oct 2013
This review is from: NASA Mars Rovers Manual: 1997-2013 (Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity) (Owners' Workshop Manual) (Haynes Owners' Workshop Manuals) (Hardcover)
I bought this unseen direct from Amazon and enjoyed ploughing through it. The headline story is just how so much has been achieved by these incredible pieces of kit.

However in a few places the text does assume a terrifically high level of technical knowledge which left me, as a sympathetic general reader a bit baffled. Although there is plenty to read about NASA's decision-making processes, a separate appendix about NASA's fortunes over the years might have helped me to a better understanding of the context in which these Rovers were built.

I did read it all the way through and was glad I did. Excellent selection of images. Recommended.

One question remained unanswered for me though. With all of the clever monitoring kit installed, why hasn't any devices to sweep or remove Mars dust from the energy-source solar panels been made to work?

A fine addition to Haynes existing spacecraft books, very nicely laid out and packed with information and great NASA images.
