5.0 out of 5 stars The right book at the right time!, 10 July 2012
This review is from: Period Property Manual: Care and repair of old houses (Haynes Manual) (Hardcover)
We bought this book just after moving into a listed townhouse in need of `a little updating' (to quote the estate agent). It actually came in really useful helping us understand the correct way to tackle all the various improvments big and small.
We actually changed some of the materials we were going to use after reading about the damage that modern cement and some paints can do to old buildings.
Unlike a lot of books on this subject that are worthy but dull, the text is written in a user-friendly way and the illustrations and use of good colour photos really help make complex subjects clear. It rightly promotes traditional solutions, so you should at least come away with a good basic knowledge of traditional building crafts and repairs.

There's a number of classic Haynes manual step by step features that take you thru all the stages for repair jobs like pointing brick and stone walls, mixing lime mortar, lime plastering, limewashing etc, even replacing a solid floor. Purists might object to the way it sometimes weaves in curious historical facts with the 'how to' stuff but that makes it intresting reading.
If you don't want to crack on with these jobs yourself it gives a very good idea as to what the builders should be doing. I would recommend this book - it's well written and easy to follow covering most of the main areas that you would expect in a lot of detail.

4.0 out of 5 stars This old house - who cares?, 9 July 2012

This review is from: Period Property Manual: Care and repair of old houses (Haynes Manual) (Hardcover)
Ian Alistair Rock's book 'Period Property' covers a multitude of scenarios for the care and repair of old properties. Therein lies its main fault. The book is
instructive and informative, but only on a very general level. It is perhaps over-ambititous to call it a 'manual'.
Because the book is linked to the famous name of 'Haynes',
long associated with car repair manuals, the expectations
of the purchaser are pitched at a certain level. Those expectations may not met by the product.

And product it is - much of the content is pictoral and
covers such a wide range of property types from stone to timber frame that the reader is left wondering how useful the book has actually been to their own individual period property. Haynes manuals are primarily aimed at the DIY
market and therein lies the rub - will the book help you to
'care (for) and repair old houses'? The answer is that it will give you a useful nudge in the right direction and it will help you talk to builders and carpenters about how repairs should be done and make you sound knowledgeable - but only up to a point.

So who should buy this book? My suggestion is that it will be of enormous help for those buying a period property for the first time - and this is especially true if the property is a timber-framed house - or DIY builders looking for hints and tips. It will also be useful for those embarking on contact with local authority 'conservation officers' whose job it is to ensure that inappropriate building methods and materials are not used in the renovation process.

Would I recommend this book? It depends on what you are looking for: it is an interersting romp through the centuries describing what time and dodgy builders have done to older properties, it is also helpful for expanding your knowledge base on care and repair of older properties.
Just don't set your expectations too high if you are planning on doing the work yourself and remember that
one useful hint, if it is applicable to your property, could save you thousands of pounds. On that basis alone, it should have a place on your book-shelf.

This review is from: Period Property Manual: Care and repair of old houses (Haynes Manual) (Hardcover)
A really good book especially when considering how many other books or even pamphlets I’ve bought that have failed to cover half of what this book has covered comprehensively, and especially good for those who want to use lime in building whether it be in bagged form or lime putty. Top!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book, 22 Nov 2013

This review is from: Period Property Manual: Care and repair of old houses (Haynes Manual) (Hardcover)
as somebody who undertakes both architectural design work on old buildings as well as survey work, I have no hesitation in recommending this well priced and well produced book. As I have found with other Haynes property manuals, i.e. the 1930s house and the Victorian house the language and style of writing will be accessible to people without much building knowledge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to old houses, 21 Oct 2012
This review is from: Period Property Manual: Care and repair of old houses (Haynes Manual) (Hardcover)
Contains a lot of info we could have used when we started renovating our house. Well worth reading even if you are only considering buying an old house.
Modern techniques applied to old houses cause worse problems and much of what we are doing is correcting past mistakes which have caused damp.
If nothing else, this book will help you find the correct tradesmen for the job.
